Gobel, Karl a Protestant theologian of Germany, was born February 18, 1808, at Solingen. He studied at Erlangen and Berlin, and was in 1837 appointed pastor at Altwied, near Neuwied-on-the-Rhine. In 1845 he was appointed successor to professor Krafft, at Erlangen, and in 1857 he was called to Posen as pastor of St. Peter's, and member of consistory. He died there April 24, 1881, a doctor of theology and member of the upper consistory. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
