Gonzaga, Scipione de an Italian cardinal, was born November 21, 1542. Cardinal Ercole de Gonzaga educated him with much care, and at the age of sixteen Scipione had perfectly acquired the ancient languages. He then studied philosophy at the University of Padtia. In 1563 he founded in that city the Academy of the Eterei, of which he remained the protector during the remainder of his life. Finally he entered into the ministry, and was appointed patriarch of Jerusalem. In 1587 he received the cardinalate from pope Sixtus V. He was the intimate friend of Tasso. He died January 11, 1593, leaving several pieces in verse, which were published among others, in 1567, of the Academy of the Eterei. In 1597 the abbot Marotti published Conmmentarii de Vita sua, memoirs written in Latin by Gonzaga. See Hoefer, Nouv. Biog. Generale, s.v.

John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
