Hamilton, Gavin a Scotch prelate, was first a minister at Hamilton, and afterwards promoted to the see of Galloway in 1606, and because the revenue was small, king James gave him the abbey of Dundrennan. He was consecrated bishop of Brechin, October 20, 1610, according to the form of the Church of England. He had also a grant from the priory of Whitern annexed to the see of Galloway. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
