Hermann, Johann Gottfried a Lutheran theologian of Germany, was born in Saxony, October 12, 1707. He studied at Leipsic, was in 1733 deacon, received a call in 1738 to Amsterdam as pastor of the German congregation, but accepted the appointment as superintendent at Plauen. In 1746 he was called to Dresden as court-preacher and member of consistory, and died July 30, 1791. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
