Nephew of a grandson of the foregoing, and also a distinguished theologian, was born at Zurich May 18, 1783. He was appointed professor of history at the university of his native place in 1844, and died there May 18, 1859. His principal works are Gesch. d. Schweizer. Kirchentrennung (Zür. 1825-27,2 vols. 8vo) — Huldreich Zwingli u. s. Zeit (ibid. 1841, 8vo). He also edited, in connection with Vigeli, Bullinger's Reformationsgesch. (vol. 1-3, Frauenf. 1840, 8vo). John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
