a Congregational minister, was born at Simsbury, Connecticut, March 26, 1779. He graduated from Yale College in 1805; was pastor of the Congregational Church in Fairfield from 1807 to 1817; in Pittstield, Massachusetts, from 1817 to 1823; president of Amherst College from 1823 to 1845; and then retired to Pittsfield, where he died, April 13, 1861. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
