in Hindu mythology, is one of the commonest representations of Siva. A pious Indian had noticed that the right eye of the god wept. Immediately he took out his right eye and put it into the idol. Soon after the left eye began to run, and the friend of the god sacrificed his left eye, and, as he was blind, he made use of his foot to find the spot where this eye was to be put in.

John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
