a Presbyterian minister, was born at Nassau, N.Y., July 19, 1798. He graduated from Union College in 1824; spent two years in Princeton Theological Seminary; was ordained by the Presbytery of New York, December 7, 1826, pastor of Cedar Street Church, New York city; in 1835 became pastor of the Beneficent Congregational Church, Providence, R.I.; in 1836 professor of political economy and ethics in the University of New York, a position which he retained until 1850. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
