Among the Methodists, the quarterly meeting is a general meeting of the stewards, leaders, and other officers, for the purpose of transacting the general business of the " circuit" or "district;" in the Methodist Episcopal Church presided over by the " presiding elder," or the minister in charge. Its special object is, besides the celebration of the Love-feast (qv.), to examine the spiritual and financial conditions of the Church. See Discipline, chap. ii, sect. 1:3. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry.
