Patterson, Nicholas a Presbyterian minister. was born in Path Valley, Cumberland County, Pa., Oct. 1, 1792. He pursued his preparatory studies first in Chambersburg, Pa., then in the academy at Summersville, N. J.; graduated in the college at Princeton, N. J.; studied theology in the Princeton Theological Seminary; was licensed in 1818, and ordained in 1821. He labored for many years in Delaware, and died in Wilmington, Del., Jan. 7, 1865. Mr. Patterson was a simplehearted, good man, an excellent preacher, and a favorite pastor. See Wilson, Presb. Hist. Almanac, 1866, p. 222. (J. L. S.)

John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry.
