Penu'el In the place of this name, SEE PENIEL. The name Penuel (Heb. Penuel', פּנוּאֵל face of God; Sept. Φανουήλ) occurs also as the name of two men.
1. First named of two sons of Hur, son of Judah. He was the father of Gedor (1Ch 4:4). B.C. post 1658.
2. Last named of eleven sons of Shashak, son of Beriah; a man of the tribe of Benjamin who dwelt in the city of Jerusalem (1Ch 8:25). B.C, post 1612.

John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
