Rothe, Johann Andreas a Lutheran theologian of Germany, was born May 12, 1688, at Lissa, Silesia, and studied at Leipsic. Count Zinzendorf selected him to fill the office of pastor at Berthelsdorf, the duties of which Roth discharged to the admiration of all who knew him. He died July 6, 1758. Rothe is the author of several hymns, the best known of which is his Ich habe nun den Grund gefunden (Engl. transl. "I now have found, for hope of heaven," in Mills, Horae Germanicaem No. 32). John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
