Russel, James, a distinguished minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, was born in Mecklenburg County, N.C., about 1786. He was admitted on trial in the South Carolina Conference in 1805, but located, on account of ill health, in 1815, and died Jan. 16, 1825. Mr. Russel had great power in the pulpit. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry.
