Sa'rai (Heb. Saray', שָׂרִי; Sept. Σάρα; Vulg. Sarai), the original name of Sarah, the wife of Abraham. It is always used in the history from Ge 11:29 to 17:15, when it was changed to Sarah at the same time that her husband's name from Abram became Abraham, and the birth of Isaac was more distinctly foretold. The meaning of the name appears to be, as Ewald has suggested, "contentious." SEE SARAH.
