Schenk, Heinrich Theobald a Lutheran hymn writer, was born at Alsfeld, and became headmaster of the school at Giessen, and afterwards chief pastor there, where he died in 1727. He is the author of Wer sind die vor Gottes Throne (based on Re 7:13-17), transl. into English by E. Cox, in Hymns from the German, p. 91, "Who are these, like stars appearing." John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
