Seven Sacraments The Council of Trent session 7, canon 1, says, "If any one shall say that the sacraments of the new law were not all instituted by Jesus Christ our Lord, or that they are more or less than seven — to wit, baptism, confirmation, the eucharist, penance, extreme unction, orders, and matrimony — or even that any one of these seven is not truly and properly a sacrament, let him be anathema." John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
