an Anglican prelate, was born near Exeter in 1803. From Westminster School he was sent to Christ Church College, Oxford, where he graduated A.B. in 1824, and A.M. in 1826. He was appointed vicar of Rayeristhorpe, Northamptonshire, in 1835; Bampton lecturer at Oxford in 1846, and the first bishop of Adelaide, South Australia, in 1847. He died October 8, 1883.

John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
