He graduated from Brown University in 1838, engaged in teaching and preaching in Richmond, Virginia, in 1840, became agent of the American Tract Society in 1854, secretary of the Baptist Mission Board in 1858, subsequently held several other agencies, became pastor at Athens, Alabama, in 1880, and died August 23, 1883. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry.
