Tribulation (צָר , θλίψις, both literally signifying. pressure or straits) expresses in the A. V. much the same as trouble or trial, importing afflictive dispensations to which a person is subjected either by way of punishment (see Jg 10:14; Mt 24:21,29; Ro 2:9; 2Th 1:6) or by way of trial (see Joh 16:33; Ro 5:3; 2Th 1:4).

John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry.
