Undine (from unda, "wave"), in mediaeval superstition is a water-sprite, corresponding nearly to the nymphs of classical mythology. Paracletus has given several minute rules what to do and how to act when one has happened to marry an Undine, and Friedrich de la Motte Fouque has treated the subject in a German tale entitled Undine.

John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry.
