obtained notoriety by issuing the edict of. A.D. 445, which contributed materially to the elevation of the papacy, for which SEE LEO I and PAPACY SEE PAPACY . He also issued laws against the Manicheans. His mother, Placidia, administered the government for him until the year 450, and afterwards he gave himself up wholly to sensual indulgences, and left the control of affairs in the hands of a eunuch. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
