Vaniere, Jacques a celebrated French Jesuit and modern Latin poet, was born at Causses, in the diocese of Beziers, Languedoc, March 9, 1664. He was educated at the Jesuits' college in Beziers, and joined the society in 1680. He was afterwards professor and rector of the Jesuit schools in Montpellier, Toulouse, and Auch. He died at Toulouse, Aug. 22, 1739. His chief works are, a volume of poetical Opuscula: — a Dictionary of Poetry, in Latin: — and a Latin poem entitled Prcedium Rusticumn. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
