Villiers (De l'Isle De Man), Philippe De grandmaster of the Knights of Rhodes, grandson of the French marshal Jean de, was born at Beauvais in 1464. He was at first grand-hospitaller of the order, later (1513) ambassador to the king, and on Jan. 22,1521, was elected grand-master in place of Caretto. It was a time of great exigency wit the order. SEE HOSPITALLERS. At the falling of the island into the hands of the Turks, he secured the retreat of his brave followers (Jan. 1,1523), whom he transferred to Malta, and died there, Aug. 22, 1534. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
