Wafer is the rendering, in the A. V., of צפַיחַת, tsephichith (from צָפִח, to flatten), a pancake (Ex 16:31), and of רָקַיק, rakik (from רָקִק, to make thin), a cake (29:2, 23; Le 2:4; Le 7:12; Le 8:26; Nu 6:15,19; 1Ch 23:29). SEE BAKE. We learn from the above passages that such thin cakes made of fine flour, usually without leaven, and anointed with oil, were used by the Hebrews in connection with their offerings. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
