Young, Edward (1), LL.D.
an English clergyman, father of the poet, was born in 1643. ‘ He was successively fellow of Winchester College, rector of Upham in Hampshire, prebendary of Salisbury (1682), chaplain to William and Mary, and dean of Salisbury. He died in 1705. He published a number of single sermons, and a collection under the title of Sermons on Several Occasions (Lond. 1702-3, 2 vols.). See Allibone, Dict. of Brit and Amer. Authors, s.v.

John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
