FOR THY NAME'S SAKE - Part 5
by Ernie Klassen
Quicken me, O LORD, for thy names' sake: for thy righteousness' sake bring my soul out of trouble." Psalm 143:11
Check out these references which emphasize the relationship between the Lord's Name and spiritual renewal:
I Kings 9:3; II Chronicles 7:14-16; Nehemiah 1:7-11.
What do these references teach about prayer for revival?
1. Prayer for revival "For Thy Name's Sake" suggests that there be no defamation of the character of God by a failure on the part of the people of God to live in accordance with the character of God.
2. In the Old Testament, the name of the groom is given to the bride, thereby promising provision and protection. Some scholars see this allusion in II Chronicles 7:14 when the biblical author states "If my people, who are called by my name…" suggesting that the predominant figure is that of a loving husband, God, who has bequeathed His Name and all that it implies as a guarantee of Divine protection and provision to His beloved bride. Revival is a way of God honouring His Name which has been invested in the life of His bride.
3. When we pray "Hallowed be Thy Name…Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done" as taught by our Lord, we see that Jesus linked the hallowed nature of the name of God with the extension of the kingdom of God.
Reader, as you seek for spiritual renewal in your personal life and in the corporate life of the church, ask God to give you a deeper passion for Him and for His glory.
