McDermott Road

When Paul was on trial before Governor Felix, he began with the defense that in Jerusalem, he was not, “disputing with anyone or stirring up a crowd, either in the temple or in the synagogues or in the city.” Everywhere he went, Paul protected his reputation. He strove to live an honorable life that his critics could not use against him. The way we live our lives will either lend credibility to the Gospel or will undermine the credibility of the Gospel. We must make sure we are living honorable and blameless lives before unbelievers.

A crowd can be fickle. One moment they love you, the next moment they are trying to kill you. That’s exactly what happened to Paul and Barnabas in Lystra. The people of Lystra worshiped the missionaries as “gods” when they first arrived. But after some provocation, the crowd turned into an angry mob who tried to execute Paul by stoning him. When crowds turn on us today, how will we respond? Will we return insult for insult and injury for injury? Or will we remember the encouraging words of Paul after he was stoned, “Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God”?

Jesus on Trial (Devotional on Matthew 26:57-68)

There was an amazing response to the Gospel amongst the Jewish people of Antioch in Pisidia. However, the Jewish leadership there was “filled with jealousy and began to contradict what was spoken by Paul, reviling him.” But this rejection did not stop the mission. In fact, the rejection amongst the Jewish people led to an opportunity with the Gentiles. The church should never be surprised when we encounter opposition and rejection. We should expect this is going to happen. When it does, we should be confident that every rejection is likely accompanied by an opportunity.

While Paul and Barnabas were preaching on the island of Cyprus, they had the opportunity to share the Good News with the governor, but Bar-Jesus (a magician and “Jewish false prophet”) opposed them. In one of the strongest statements of Acts, Paul said to Bar-Jesus, “You son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of deceit and villainy, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?” The church must be able to recognize and call out false teaching that blinds people to the truth of the Gospel. We must speak truth and trust that the truth will always prevail against lies.

Herod Agrippa violently persecuted the church. He executed the apostle James. He also arrested and intended to kill Peter. He did all of this in order to curry favor with Judean leadership. He was a shrewd and cunning politician, motivated by an insatiable appetite for power and control. But the Lord rescued Peter from prison and ended Herod’s arrogant reign of terror. When the church is persecuted by power-hungry political leaders, the answer is not to give allegiance to rival leaders, but to give our allegiance to King Jesus and trust him.

Marriage and Divorce (Devotional on Matthew 19:1-12)

Though the Jerusalem church accepted (in theory) the idea that God had granted repentance to the Gentiles, a truly multi-ethnic congregation wasn’t formed until the Good News came to the city of Antioch. This was a city with populations of various ethnic groups. Ethnic groups stayed mostly to themselves and tensions ran deep. But the Good News of Jesus began to change all of that. People of various ethnicities began to embrace each other as siblings. Outsiders probably didn’t know what to call this new multi-ethnic group, so they ended up called them “Christians.”

“19 Now those who were scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except Jews. 20 But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who on coming to Antioch spoke to the Hellenists[a] also, preaching the Lord Jesus. 21 And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number who believed turned to the Lord. 22 The report of this came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. 23 When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad, and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose, 24 for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were added to the Lord. 25 So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, 26 and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a great many people. And in Antioch the disciples were first called Christians." (Acts 11:19-26, ESV)

Though the Jerusalem church accepted (in theory) the idea that God had granted repentance to the Gentiles, a truly multi-ethnic congregation wasn’t formed until the Good News came to the city of Antioch. This was a city with populations of various ethnic groups. Ethnic groups stayed mostly to themselves and tensions ran deep. But the Good News of Jesus began to change all of that. People of various ethnicities began to embrace each other as siblings. Outsiders probably didn’t know what to call this new multi-ethnic group, so they ended up called them “Christians.”

Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” 3 He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 5 But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,” 6 he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God. 7 You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said: 
8 “‘This people honors me with their lips, 
 but their heart is far from me; 
9 in vain do they worship me, 
 teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’” (Matthew 15:1-9, ESV)
