Now the Israelites are back in Jerusalem after four months of journey from Babylon. Reports are reaching Ezra of the idolatry of the people of Israel, their mingling with the foreign gods, and customs. They have abandoned the sacred covenant of God. Ezra as the priest and leader of the people took the responsibility of offering supplication, prayers, for repentance. He did not say, it was not his responsibility.
