This sermon covers the parallel passages of
Matthew 18:6-11,
Mark 9:38-50, and
Luke 9:49-50 when Jesus is correcting the disciples about their pride/discussion over who is the greatest. Jesus warns them and us about hindering others, causing others to stumble, and to do whatever it takes to clear from our lives/path the many stumbling blocks of pride that trip us up into sin. Pastor Chad follows Mark's flow of thought in addressing 5 RADICAL points: 1. Radical Stipulation (
Mark 9:38-41,
Luke 9:49-50) – Make sure you are not disparaging, disassociating, or demonizing anyone who is on our side. (Who is a real Christian/on the Lord’s side?) 2. Radical Protection (
Matthew 18:7) – Make sure your defenses are always strong against the numerous stumbling blocks/temptations of the world to get you to fall into pride/sin. 3. Radical Examination (
Matthew 18:6-7,
Mark 9:42) - Make sure you are not causing anyone else to stumble into pride/sin. 4. Radical Amputation (
Matthew 18:8-9) - Make sure you are not ignoring any stumbling blocks of sin/pride in your own life, but do whatever it takes to completely clear them out of your path so that you no longer stumble over them or struggle with them. 5. Radical Realization (
Matthew 18:9,
Mark 9:43-50) – Hell is real, Hell is forever, and a Perfect God who is Perfect in Justice demands it, warns about it, and will execute it on all the prideful/unrepentant sinners and rejecters of His mercy/grace/free offer of righteousness, forgiveness, and eternal life through Jesus Christ. As application, beware and root out the following areas of the world's stumbling blocks: 1. People (agents of Satan that introduce hardship, temptation, distraction, doubt, and disobedience), 2. Possessions (consumed with gaining riches, materialism, things that don’t last), 3. Pleasure / Happiness (idolizing family, food, sex, alcohol, drugs, fitness, leisure, entertainment), 4. Position / Power / Pride (becoming important in others eyes or our own eyes), 5. Propaganda (False Doctrine, Humanistic Thinking, Lies/Deception). May the Lord help us all repent and do whatever it takes to "ballo" (Greek word) to throw/cast away whatever sin areas are besetting us so that our path is free from these stumbling blocks and we can run a good race for our King.
Hebrews 12:1-4 "Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith."
