Heb 8:13
“In that He says, "A new covenant," He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.” NKJV
I. The New Covenant's Superior Priest (8:1) This is something that we have been learning!
A. Christ, our High Priest, is superior to Aaron or anyone that followed in his lineage Heb. 7:26-28
B. Christ, our High Priest, has sat down, since His work of redemption is finished.
C. Christ is our King-Priest in heaven,
1. Lives to make intercession for us forever.
2. Comes the tribe of Judah (The lineage of kings)
II. The New Covenant's Superior Place (8:2-5)
We find Christ in the courts of the temple while on earth, but never in the holy place or in the holy of holies. But this only proves the superiority of the New Covenant:
A. Our High Priest ministers from heaven and not from earth.
B. Our High Priest ministers in the original temple and not the copy
III. The New Covenant's Superior Promises (8:6-13)
A. The promise of unconditional grace (8:6-9).
B. The promise of an inner change (8:10).
C. The promise of unlimited blessing (8:11).
D. The promise of sins forgiven (8:12).
E. The promise of eternal blessing (8:13).
What does all this mean to you and me?
1. We are now the recipients of the grace that was promised to Israel. (Eph. 2:8-13; Rom. 9; I Peter 1:10)
Eph 2:11-12
11 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision
by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;
12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: KJV
I Peter 1:10
Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently,
who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: KJV
2. We can experience the ‘change of the inner man’ (‘the new birth’ John 3:3, 9) promised to Israel.
Col. 3:9-10
9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: KJV
3. We are to be living epistles of the experience of the grace and change in our lives. (II Cor. 3:3-18)
II Cor 3:3
clearly you are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God,
not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart. NKJV
