This sermon focuses on Luke 6:27-36, the parallel to Matthew 5:38-48, that gives more detail and instruction how to overcome evil with good. Luke 6 gives 7 principles that are critical to overcoming bitterness or dealing with those who are perceived as our enemies.

1. Love your enemies (Luke 6:27a)
2. Do good to those who hate you (Luke 6:27b)
3. Bless those who curse you (Luke 6:28a)
4. Pray for those who mistreat you (Luke 6:28b)
5. Give to everyone who ask of you (Luke 6:30a)...whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back (6:30b)
6. Treat others the same way you want them to treat you (Luke 6:31)
Summary (Luke 6:35) "But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be geat, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men.
7. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful (Luke 6:36)

Pastor Chad explains each of these principles and urges forgiveness and thankfulness as the antidote to bitterness. These principles are not natural (our natural inclination is to hate, seek revenge, keep a record of wrongs, return evil for evil) and are only possible to enact and practice by the supernatural power and help of the God as we appropriate and utilize the resources He has given us (His Spirit, His Word, His Church/the help of other believers).
