When Zurich reformers Conrad Grebel and Felix Manz baptized each other in 1525, they launched a movement more radical than Luther or Zwingli imagined—the Anabaptists, or “Radical Reformers.” Rejecting infant baptism, they preached believer’s baptism, separation of church and state, pacifism, and a voluntary gathered church, making them enemies of both Catholics and Protestants. From Felix Manz’s drowning in Zurich to the spread of the Swiss Brethren, Mennonites, Hutterites, and Amish, the Anabaptists’ defiance shaped modern religious freedom and birthed the first “free churches” of the Reformation era.
