Tithing was required in Israel in order to care for the needs of the priests and Levites, who had no inheritance in the land of Canaan. The tithe was not simply 10% of the money you made during the year, it was 10% of your what you grew, or the animals you had that previous year. The tithe was to be brought to the tabernacle, where sacrifices would be made. The problem would be though that once Israel settled in the land, carrying what was to be tithed from your home to the tabernacle would be an onerous task. As such, it was likely that many in Israel simply wouldn't do it, leaving the Levites destitute. What accommodation did the Lord make then that would alleviate this problem? In Lesson 47 of our study of Deuteronomy we learn the answer to this question.
