Greg Laurie is the senior pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship with campuses in California and Hawaii. Today, Harvest is one of the largest churches in America with over 15,000 attendees.
 
Greg Laurie is also the founder of the evangelistic events called Harvest Crusades with over nine million attendees and over half a million professions of faith. In addition Greg’s daily nationally syndicated radio program, A New Beginning which is heard on over 1000 radio stations. 

Greg Laurie is the author of over 70 books including Steve McQueen: The Salvation of an American Icon and Lost Boy. Both of which have been adapted into award-winning films.

Simon Peter was a fisherman by trade. So it seems fitting that his first encounter with Jesus had taken place on a boat. Luke 5 tells us that after an unsuccessful fishing excursion, Peter was cleaning his nets when he saw Jesus being followed by a large crowd. Jesus stepped onto Peter’s boat and asked him to row Him out a little bit so that He could teach the crowd from the boat. After Jesus finished teaching, He instructed Peter to row a little further out and let down his nets again. This time when Peter did, the nets became so full of fish that they began to tear. It was a miraculous haul. 
 
 
In the last chapter of John’s Gospel, Jesus repeats the scene. Peter and six other disciples had returned to their boats in Galilee. After fishing all night with nothing to show for it, they were rowing back to shore. A voice from the beach told them to cast their nets on the right side of the boat. When they did, their nets filled immediately. 
 
 
“It’s the Lord!” John realized in verse 7 (NLT). 
 
 
That was all Simon Peter needed to hear. In true Simon Peter fashion, he immediately jumped overboard and swam to shore. 
 
 
Jesus had breakfast ready for His hungry disciples. After they had eaten, Jesus asked Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” (verse 15a NLT). In other words, “Is your love for Me greater than the love of these other disciples?” 
 
 
“‘Yes, Lord,’ Peter replied, ‘you know I love you.’ 
 
 
“‘Then feed my lambs,’ Jesus told him” (verse 15b NLT). 
 
 
Twice more, Jesus asked if Peter loved Him. Twice more, Peter said yes. And twice more Jesus gave a variation of His instruction: “Then take care of my sheep” (verse 16 NLT) and “Then feed my sheep” (verse 17 NLT). 
 
 
On the night of Jesus’ arrest, Peter had denied three times that he was Jesus’ disciple. On the shore of the Sea of Galilee, three times he announced that he was, in fact, Jesus’ disciple. Jesus gave Peter the chance to redeem himself and prove his true character. 
 
 
The disciple who had been too timid to admit his connection with Jesus would soon become one of the boldest in proclaiming Jesus’ message. Peter would become one of the cornerstones of the first-century church. And, as Jesus informs him, he would one day die by the same means Jesus did. “You will stretch out your hands” (verse 18 NLT) is a reference to crucifixion. Church tradition tells us that Peter was crucified in Rome. 
 
 
In the final chapter of John, Jesus shows us that no failure is too devastating to come back from. As long as we have breath to confess and repent, we can recover. Jesus will forgive us. He will restore us. He will give us an important purpose and place in His work.

Happy New Year! We’re going to begin 2025 with a monthlong journey through the Gospel of John. 
 
 
This Gospel was written by one of Jesus’ closest friends. In fact, John refers to himself as the disciple whom Jesus loved. Like the other 11 disciples, John was a regular guy. He wasn’t a religious scholar. He wasn’t part of the Jewish elite in Israel. He was a fisherman, a blue-collar man. 
 
 
He was also a brash, ambitious hothead. He once rebuked a man for casting out demons in Jesus’ name because the man didn’t belong to John’s group of disciples (see Mark 9:38). He asked Jesus for a place of honor in His kingdom (see Mark 10:37). And when a Samaritan village refused to show hospitality to Jesus and the disciples, John asked Jesus if they could call down fire from Heaven to destroy the entire population (see Luke 9:54). It’s no wonder Jesus nicknamed John and his brother James the “sons of thunder.” 
 
 
Yet John was Jesus’ choice to be His disciple. That meant he had a front-row seat to three years that changed the world. He listened to Jesus’ teachings. He witnessed His miracles. He saw Jesus interact with devoted followers, scheming enemies, and everyone in between. 
 
 
John saw what very few others were privileged to see: Jesus, up close and personal, day in and day out. And based on everything he saw, John believed. He believed Jesus was the Son of God, the Messiah, the Savior of the world. 
 
 
And he wrote his Gospel so that we might see and believe too. 
 
 
After Jesus ascended to Heaven, John continued His ministry. He preached the Good News. He helped found the church in Jerusalem and ministered to its members. He faced threats, persecution, and imprisonment because of his faith. But he refused to be silenced. 
 
 
According to church tradition, John was the only disciple who wasn’t martyred. And when he wrote his Gospel, he was “the last man standing”—the only one of Jesus’ inner circle left to tell the story. He likely wrote it sometime around AD 90, some 60 years after the events occurred. But they were still fresh in his memory. 
 
 
John lived long enough to witness the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem, the center of Jewish worship (not to be confused with the church in Jerusalem). The destruction had a profound effect on Jewish people throughout the Roman Empire. With their place of worship gone, they had to make other arrangements for their sacrifices and festivals. 
 
 
In his Gospel, John presents Jesus as the answer to their spiritual vacuum. He shows how Jesus fulfilled everything the Jewish sacrifices and festivals were intended to accomplish. 
 
 
John minced no words in writing about the need to believe in Jesus. John 3:16 may be the best-known verse in the entire Bible. It’s also the core of Christian outreach: “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” (NLT)

We get saved and filled with Holy Spirit and we still go back to our old ways. We're human and we carry tendencies of shame and guilt from the past. When we get rid of condemnation and shame in our life we can move forward with God's best in our life. When we are living our best life we can help build God's Kingdom!

On our recent trip to Israel, we had an opportunity to spend an evening next to the shore of the Sea of Galilee. We gathered around a bonfire, worshiping our Lord with fellow believers. A gentle breeze blowing off the waves. 
It’s times like that that make you think about all that God has done in your life. It was truly a beautiful, holy moment. It makes you thankful for God’s grace in giving us what we do not deserve. 
One of the ways that God’s grace has been revealed in my life is the grace to start over. I’m so thankful that God never gave up on me. When I faltered and when I failed, God’s grace was extended to start over. 
One of the most beautiful stories of God’s grace to start over was Jesus restoring Simon Peter after he failed miserably. We can all relate to failure; the question is, how do you recover from it? 
Once a person has failed the enemy has a powerful weapon, and that weapon is shame. But the beauty and the power of the story is that God takes away the shame and restores Peter in His great love and renews the purpose and calling on his life. 
The story begins shortly after the resurrection of Jesus. The resurrection changes everything. It changed the meaning of the cross. Before the resurrection, it represented death and struck fear in the hearts of any who looked upon a cross. But after the resurrection, it became a symbol of hope and a reminder of how much God loves. It has become a thing of beauty that represents hope. That’s why we place crosses on graves. 
 The resurrection changed death itself. Before, the grave was the final chapter, the end of all hope, the final curtain. But because of the resurrection, death no longer is master over us, it has been conquered, it has been defeated. Our last breath is not the end; that is when life truly begins. 
 The resurrection gave us an eternal perspective. Before, all we could hope for was here on earth; our purpose, the meaning of life, it was all centered here, on the material, on things which are earthly. Now, because of the resurrection, all those things seem so unimportant when compared to the eternal weight of glory. We have been set free. 
 I read the story of a man who was radically changed because he understood how much God loved him when the Lamb of God died on the cross. When he was a young boy, a neighbor gave him a baby lamb. It became his constant companion and best friend. One day he came home to find his father in a drunken rage, fixing a flat tire. Out of curiosity, the boy’s pet lamb had wandered over, but the father, in a drunken rage, struck the lamb with a tire iron, and killed it. 
Hatred filled the boy’s heart. He was never the same. He hated everyone and everything, including himself. Many years later, a friend invited him to church. The pastor was speaking about a Lamb; the Lamb of God who died on the cross, willingly giving his life because of love. 
 For the first time in his life, he understood love. The Lamb of God died so he could receive love; the Father’s love he had never known. It changed him; he could feel the hatred leaving his heart as he gave his heart to this love. 
 When you look at this chapter in the book of John, it’s about starting over; it’s about the new life that God has in store for us. It’s about faith, hope, and love.
