Ezekiel 26:1

In the eleventh month of the twelfth<ft>1</ft> year, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me:<cr>1</cr>

“Son of man, because Tyre<cr>1</cr> has said of Jerusalem, ‘Aha!<cr>2</cr> The gate to the nations is broken, and its doors have swung open to me; now that she lies in ruins I will prosper,’

Ezekiel 26:2

therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Tyre, and I will bring many nations against you, like the sea<cr>1</cr> casting up its waves.

Ezekiel 26:3

They will destroy<cr>1</cr> the walls of Tyre<cr>2</cr> and pull down her towers; I will scrape away her rubble and make her a bare rock.

Ezekiel 26:4

Out in the sea<cr>1</cr> she will become a place to spread fishnets,<cr>2</cr> for I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord. She will become plunder<cr>3</cr> for the nations,<cr>4</cr>

Ezekiel 26:5

and her settlements on the mainland will be ravaged by the sword. Then they will know that I am the Lord.

Ezekiel 26:6

“For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: From the north I am going to bring against Tyre Nebuchadnezzar<ft>1</ft><cr>1</cr> king of Babylon, king of kings,<cr>2</cr> with horses and chariots,<cr>3</cr> with horsemen and a great army.

Ezekiel 26:7

He will ravage your settlements on the mainland with the sword; he will set up siege works<cr>1</cr> against you, build a ramp<cr>2</cr> up to your walls and raise his shields against you.

Ezekiel 26:8

He will direct the blows of his battering rams against your walls and demolish your towers with his weapons.<cr>1</cr>

Ezekiel 26:9

His horses will be so many that they will cover you with dust. Your walls will tremble at the noise of the warhorses, wagons and chariots<cr>1</cr> when he enters your gates as men enter a city whose walls have been broken through.

Ezekiel 26:10

The hooves<cr>1</cr> of his horses will trample all your streets; he will kill your people with the sword, and your strong pillars<cr>2</cr> will fall to the ground.<cr>3</cr>

Ezekiel 26:11

They will plunder your wealth and loot your merchandise; they will break down your walls and demolish your fine houses and throw your stones, timber and rubble into the sea.<cr>1</cr>

Ezekiel 26:12

I will put an end<cr>1</cr> to your noisy songs,<cr>2</cr> and the music of your harps<cr>3</cr> will be heard no more.<cr>4</cr>

Ezekiel 26:13

I will make you a bare rock, and you will become a place to spread fishnets. You will never be rebuilt,<cr>1</cr> for I the Lord have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.

Ezekiel 26:14

“This is what the Sovereign Lord says to Tyre: Will not the coastlands<cr>1</cr> tremble<cr>2</cr> at the sound of your fall, when the wounded groan<cr>3</cr> and the slaughter takes place in you?

Ezekiel 26:15

Then all the princes of the coast will step down from their thrones and lay aside their robes and take off their embroidered<cr>1</cr> garments. Clothed<cr>2</cr> with terror, they will sit on the ground,<cr>3</cr> trembling<cr>4</cr> every moment, appalled<cr>5</cr> at you.

Ezekiel 26:16

Then they will take up a lament<cr>1</cr> concerning you and say to you:<pb/><poetry>“‘How you are destroyed, city of renown, <indent>peopled by men of the sea!</indent> You were a power on the seas, <indent>you and your citizens;</indent> you put your terror <indent>on all who lived there.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Ezekiel 26:17

Now the coastlands tremble<cr>1</cr> <indent>on the day of your fall;</indent> the islands in the sea <indent>are terrified at your collapse.’<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Ezekiel 26:18

“This is what the Sovereign Lord says: When I make you a desolate city, like cities no longer inhabited, and when I bring the ocean depths<cr>1</cr> over you and its vast waters cover you,<cr>2</cr>

Ezekiel 26:19

then I will bring you down with those who go down to the pit,<cr>1</cr> to the people of long ago. I will make you dwell in the earth below, as in ancient ruins, with those who go down to the pit, and you will not return or take your place<ft>1</ft> in the land of the living.<cr>2</cr>

Ezekiel 26:20

I will bring you to a horrible end and you will be no more.<cr>1</cr> You will be sought, but you will never again be found, declares the Sovereign Lord.”<cr>2</cr>

“Son of man, take up a lament<cr>1</cr> concerning Tyre.

Ezekiel 27:2

Say to Tyre,<cr>1</cr> situated at the gateway to the sea,<cr>2</cr> merchant of peoples on many coasts, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:<pb/><poetry>“‘You say, Tyre, <indent>“I am perfect in beauty.<cr>3</cr> ”</indent>

Ezekiel 27:3

Your domain was on the high seas; <indent>your builders brought your beauty to perfection.<cr>1</cr> </indent>

Ezekiel 27:4

They made all your timbers <indent>of juniper from Senir<ft>1</ft>;<cr>1</cr> </indent> they took a cedar from Lebanon<cr>2</cr> <indent>to make a mast for you.</indent>

Ezekiel 27:5

Of oaks<cr>1</cr> from Bashan <indent>they made your oars;</indent> of cypress wood<ft>1</ft> from the coasts of Cyprus<cr>2</cr> <indent>they made your deck, adorned with ivory.</indent>

Ezekiel 27:6

Fine embroidered linen<cr>1</cr> from Egypt was your sail <indent>and served as your banner;</indent> your awnings were of blue and purple<cr>2</cr> <indent>from the coasts of Elishah.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Ezekiel 27:7

Men of Sidon and Arvad<cr>1</cr> were your oarsmen; <indent>your skilled men, Tyre, were aboard as your sailors.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Ezekiel 27:8

Veteran craftsmen of Byblos<cr>1</cr> were on board <indent>as shipwrights to caulk your seams.</indent> All the ships of the sea<cr>2</cr> and their sailors <indent>came alongside to trade for your wares.</indent><pb/><poetry>

Ezekiel 27:9

“‘Men of Persia,<cr>1</cr> Lydia<cr>2</cr> and Put<cr>3</cr> <indent>served as soldiers in your army.</indent> They hung their shields<cr>4</cr> and helmets on your walls, <indent>bringing you splendor.</indent>

Ezekiel 27:10

Men of Arvad and Helek <indent>guarded your walls on every side;</indent> men of Gammad <indent>were in your towers.</indent> They hung their shields around your walls; <indent>they brought your beauty to perfection.<cr>1</cr> </indent>

Ezekiel 27:11

“‘Tarshish<cr>1</cr> did business with you because of your great wealth of goods;<cr>2</cr> they exchanged silver, iron, tin and lead for your merchandise.

Ezekiel 27:12

“‘Greece,<cr>1</cr> Tubal and Meshek<cr>2</cr> did business with you; they traded human beings<cr>3</cr> and articles of bronze for your wares.

Ezekiel 27:13

“‘Men of Beth Togarmah<cr>1</cr> exchanged chariot horses, cavalry horses and mules for your merchandise.

Ezekiel 27:14

“‘The men of Rhodes<ft>1</ft><cr>1</cr> traded with you, and many coastlands<cr>2</cr> were your customers; they paid you with ivory<cr>3</cr> tusks and ebony.

Ezekiel 27:15

“‘Aram<ft>1</ft><cr>1</cr> did business with you because of your many products; they exchanged turquoise,<cr>2</cr> purple fabric, embroidered work, fine linen,<cr>3</cr> coral<cr>4</cr> and rubies for your merchandise.

Ezekiel 27:16

“‘Judah and Israel traded with you; they exchanged wheat<cr>1</cr> from Minnith<cr>2</cr> and confections,<ft>1</ft> honey, olive oil and balm<cr>3</cr> for your wares.<cr>4</cr>

Ezekiel 27:17

“‘Damascus<cr>1</cr> did business with you because of your many products and great wealth of goods.<cr>2</cr> They offered wine from Helbon, wool from Zahar

Ezekiel 27:18

and casks of wine from Izal<cr>1</cr> in exchange for your wares: wrought iron, cassia<cr>2</cr> and calamus.

Ezekiel 27:19

“‘Dedan<cr>1</cr> traded in saddle blankets with you.

Ezekiel 27:20

“‘Arabia<cr>1</cr> and all the princes of Kedar<cr>2</cr> were your customers; they did business with you in lambs, rams and goats.

Ezekiel 27:21

“‘The merchants of Sheba<cr>1</cr> and Raamah traded with you; for your merchandise they exchanged the finest of all kinds of spices<cr>2</cr> and precious stones, and gold.<cr>3</cr>

Ezekiel 27:22

“‘Harran,<cr>1</cr> Kanneh and Eden<cr>2</cr> and merchants of Sheba, Ashur<cr>3</cr> and Kilmad traded with you.

Ezekiel 27:23

In your marketplace they traded with you beautiful garments, blue fabric, embroidered work and multicolored rugs with cords twisted and tightly knotted.<pb/><poetry>

Ezekiel 27:24

“‘The ships of Tarshish<cr>1</cr> serve <indent>as carriers for your wares.</indent> You are filled with heavy cargo <indent>as you sail the sea.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Ezekiel 27:25

Your oarsmen take you <indent>out to the high seas.</indent> But the east wind<cr>1</cr> will break you to pieces <indent>far out at sea.</indent>

Ezekiel 27:26

Your wealth,<cr>1</cr> merchandise and wares, <indent>your mariners, sailors and shipwrights,</indent> your merchants and all your soldiers, <indent>and everyone else on board</indent> will sink into the heart of the sea<cr>2</cr> <indent>on the day of your shipwreck.</indent>

Ezekiel 27:27

The shorelands will quake<cr>1</cr> <indent>when your sailors cry out.</indent>

Ezekiel 27:28

All who handle the oars <indent>will abandon their ships;</indent> the mariners and all the sailors <indent>will stand on the shore.</indent>

Ezekiel 27:29

They will raise their voice <indent>and cry bitterly over you;</indent> they will sprinkle dust<cr>1</cr> on their heads <indent>and roll<cr>2</cr> in ashes.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Ezekiel 27:30

They will shave their heads<cr>1</cr> because of you <indent>and will put on sackcloth.</indent> They will weep<cr>2</cr> over you with anguish of soul <indent>and with bitter mourning.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Ezekiel 27:31

As they wail and mourn over you, <indent>they will take up a lament<cr>1</cr> concerning you:</indent> “Who was ever silenced like Tyre, <indent>surrounded by the sea?<cr>2</cr> ”</indent>

Ezekiel 27:32

When your merchandise went out on the seas,<cr>1</cr> <indent>you satisfied many nations;</indent> with your great wealth<cr>2</cr> and your wares <indent>you enriched the kings of the earth.</indent>

Ezekiel 27:33

Now you are shattered by the sea <indent>in the depths of the waters;</indent> your wares and all your company <indent>have gone down with you.<cr>1</cr> </indent>

Ezekiel 27:34

All who live in the coastlands<cr>1</cr> <indent>are appalled<cr>2</cr> at you;</indent> their kings shudder with horror <indent>and their faces are distorted with fear.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Ezekiel 27:35

The merchants among the nations scoff at you;<cr>1</cr> <indent>you have come to a horrible end</indent> <indent>and will be no more.<cr>2</cr> ’”</indent>

Ezekiel 28:1

“Son of man<cr>1</cr> , say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:<pb/><poetry>“‘In the pride of your heart <indent>you say, “I am a god;</indent> I sit on the throne<cr>2</cr> of a god <indent>in the heart of the seas.”<cr>3</cr> </indent> But you are a mere mortal and not a god, <indent>though you think you are as wise as a god.<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Ezekiel 28:2

Are you wiser than Daniel<ft>1</ft>?<cr>1</cr> <indent>Is no secret hidden from you?</indent>

Ezekiel 28:3

By your wisdom and understanding <indent>you have gained wealth for yourself</indent> and amassed gold and silver <indent>in your treasuries.<cr>1</cr> </indent>

Ezekiel 28:4

By your great skill in trading<cr>1</cr> <indent>you have increased your wealth,<cr>2</cr> </indent> and because of your wealth <indent>your heart has grown proud.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Ezekiel 28:5

“‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:<pb/><poetry>“‘Because you think you are wise, <indent>as wise as a god,</indent>

Ezekiel 28:6

I am going to bring foreigners against you, <indent>the most ruthless of nations;<cr>1</cr> </indent> they will draw their swords against your beauty and wisdom<cr>2</cr> <indent>and pierce your shining splendor.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Ezekiel 28:7

They will bring you down to the pit,<cr>1</cr> <indent>and you will die a violent death<cr>2</cr> </indent> <indent>in the heart of the seas.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Ezekiel 28:8

Will you then say, “I am a god,” <indent>in the presence of those who kill you?</indent> You will be but a mortal, not a god,<cr>1</cr> <indent>in the hands of those who slay you.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Ezekiel 28:9

You will die the death of the uncircumcised<cr>1</cr> <indent>at the hands of foreigners.</indent><pb/>I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”

“Son of man, take up a lament<cr>1</cr> concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:<pb/><poetry>“‘You were the seal of perfection, <indent>full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Ezekiel 28:12

You were in Eden,<cr>1</cr> <indent>the garden of God;<cr>2</cr> </indent> every precious stone<cr>3</cr> adorned you: <indent>carnelian, chrysolite and emerald,</indent> <indent>topaz, onyx and jasper,</indent> <indent>lapis lazuli, turquoise<cr>4</cr> and beryl.<ft>1</ft></indent> Your settings and mountings<ft>2</ft> were made of gold; <indent>on the day you were created they were prepared.<cr>5</cr> </indent>

Ezekiel 28:13

You were anointed<cr>1</cr> as a guardian cherub,<cr>2</cr> <indent>for so I ordained you.</indent> You were on the holy mount of God; <indent>you walked among the fiery stones.</indent>

Ezekiel 28:14

You were blameless in your ways <indent>from the day you were created</indent> <indent>till wickedness was found in you.</indent>

Ezekiel 28:15

Through your widespread trade <indent>you were filled with violence,<cr>1</cr> </indent> <indent>and you sinned.</indent> So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, <indent>and I expelled you, guardian cherub,<cr>2</cr> </indent> <indent>from among the fiery stones.</indent>

Ezekiel 28:16

Your heart became proud<cr>1</cr> <indent>on account of your beauty,</indent> and you corrupted your wisdom <indent>because of your splendor.</indent> So I threw you to the earth; <indent>I made a spectacle of you before kings.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Ezekiel 28:17

By your many sins and dishonest trade <indent>you have desecrated your sanctuaries.</indent> So I made a fire<cr>1</cr> come out from you, <indent>and it consumed you,</indent> and I reduced you to ashes<cr>2</cr> on the ground <indent>in the sight of all who were watching.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Ezekiel 28:18

All the nations who knew you <indent>are appalled<cr>1</cr> at you;</indent> you have come to a horrible end <indent>and will be no more.<cr>2</cr> ’”</indent>

“Son of man, set your face against<cr>1</cr> Sidon;<cr>2</cr> prophesy against her

Ezekiel 28:21

and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:<pb/><poetry>“‘I am against you, Sidon, <indent>and among you I will display my glory.<cr>1</cr> </indent> You will know that I am the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, <indent>when I inflict punishment<cr>2</cr> on you</indent> <indent>and within you am proved to be holy.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Ezekiel 28:22

I will send a plague upon you <indent>and make blood flow in your streets.</indent> The slain will fall within you, <indent>with the sword against you on every side.</indent> Then you will know that I am the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>.<cr>1</cr>

“‘No longer will the people of Israel have malicious neighbors who are painful briers and sharp thorns.<cr>1</cr> Then they will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.

Ezekiel 28:24

“‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: When I gather<cr>1</cr> the people of Israel from the nations where they have been scattered,<cr>2</cr> I will be proved holy<cr>3</cr> through them in the sight of the nations. Then they will live in their own land, which I gave to my servant Jacob.<cr>4</cr>

They will live there in safety<cr>1</cr> and will build houses and plant<cr>2</cr> vineyards; they will live in safety when I inflict punishment<cr>3</cr> on all their neighbors who maligned them. Then they will know that I am the Lord their God.<cr>4</cr> ’”

You will be but a mortal, not a god,   in the hands of those who slay you.    10 You will die the death of the uncircumcised   at the hands of foreigners. I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.’” 11 The word of the Lord came to me: 12 “Son of man, take up a lament   concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “‘You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.    13 You were in Eden,   the garden of God;   every precious stone   adorned you: carnelian, chrysolite and emerald, topaz, onyx and jasper, lapis lazuli, turquoise   and beryl.  Your settings and mountings  were made of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared.    14 You were anointed   as a guardian cherub,   for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones.  15 You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you.  16 Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence,   and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, guardian cherub,   from among the fiery stones.  17 Your heart became proud   on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before kings.    18 By your many sins and dishonest trade you have desecrated your sanctuaries. So I made a fire   come out from you, and it consumed you, and I reduced you to ashes   on the ground in the sight of all who were watching.    19 All the nations who knew you are appalled   at you; you have come to a horrible end and will be no more.  ’” 20 The word of the Lord came to me: 21 “Son of man, set your face against   Sidon;   prophesy against her 22 and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “‘I am against you, Sidon, and among you I will display my glory.   You will know that I am the Lord, when I inflict punishment   on you and within you am proved to be holy.    23 I will send a plague upon you and make blood flow in your streets. The slain will fall within you, with the sword against you on every side. Then you will know that I am the Lord.   24 “‘No longer will the people of Israel have malicious neighbors who are painful briers and sharp thorns.   Then they will know that I am the Sovereign Lord. 25 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: When I gather   the people of Israel from the nations where they have been scattered,   I will be proved holy   through them in the sight of the nations. Then they will live in their own land, which I gave to my servant Jacob.   26 They will live there in safety   and will build houses and plant   vineyards; they will live in safety when I inflict punishment   on all their neighbors who maligned them. Then they will know that I am the Lord their God.  ’”
