Isaiah 56:1

This is what the Lord says:<pb/><poetry>“Maintain justice<cr>1</cr> <indent>and do what is right,<cr>2</cr> </indent> for my salvation<cr>3</cr> is close at hand <indent>and my righteousness<cr>4</cr> will soon be revealed.</indent>

Blessed<cr>1</cr> is the one who does this— <indent>the person who holds it fast,</indent> who keeps the Sabbath<cr>2</cr> without desecrating it, <indent>and keeps their hands from doing any evil.”</indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 56:2

Let no foreigner<cr>1</cr> who is bound to the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> say, <indent>“The <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> will surely exclude me from his people.”<cr>2</cr> </indent> And let no eunuch<cr>3</cr> complain, <indent>“I am only a dry tree.”</indent>

Isaiah 56:3

For this is what the Lord says:<pb/><poetry>“To the eunuchs<cr>1</cr> who keep my Sabbaths, <indent>who choose what pleases me</indent> <indent>and hold fast to my covenant<cr>2</cr> —</indent>

Isaiah 56:4

to them I will give within my temple and its walls<cr>1</cr> <indent>a memorial<cr>2</cr> and a name</indent> <indent>better than sons and daughters;</indent> I will give them an everlasting name<cr>3</cr> <indent>that will endure forever.<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 56:5

And foreigners<cr>1</cr> who bind themselves to the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> <indent>to minister<cr>2</cr> to him,</indent> to love the name<cr>3</cr> of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, <indent>and to be his servants,</indent> all who keep the Sabbath<cr>4</cr> without desecrating it <indent>and who hold fast to my covenant—</indent>

Isaiah 56:6

these I will bring to my holy mountain<cr>1</cr> <indent>and give them joy in my house of prayer.</indent> Their burnt offerings and sacrifices<cr>2</cr> <indent>will be accepted on my altar;</indent> for my house will be called <indent>a house of prayer for all nations.<cr>3</cr> ”<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 56:7

The Sovereign <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> declares— <indent>he who gathers the exiles of Israel:</indent> “I will gather<cr>1</cr> still others to them <indent>besides those already gathered.”</indent>

Isaiah 56:8

Isaiah 56:9

Come, all you beasts of the field,<cr>1</cr> <indent>come and devour, all you beasts of the forest!</indent>

Israel’s watchmen<cr>1</cr> are blind, <indent>they all lack knowledge;<cr>2</cr> </indent> they are all mute dogs, <indent>they cannot bark;</indent> they lie around and dream, <indent>they love to sleep.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 56:10

They are dogs with mighty appetites; <indent>they never have enough.</indent> They are shepherds<cr>1</cr> who lack understanding;<cr>2</cr> <indent>they all turn to their own way,<cr>3</cr> </indent> <indent>they seek their own gain.<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 56:11

“Come,” each one cries, “let me get wine!<cr>1</cr> <indent>Let us drink our fill of beer!</indent> And tomorrow will be like today, <indent>or even far better.”<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 56:12

The righteous perish,<cr>1</cr> <indent>and no one takes it to heart;<cr>2</cr> </indent> the devout are taken away, <indent>and no one understands</indent> that the righteous are taken away <indent>to be spared from evil.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 57:1

Those who walk uprightly<cr>1</cr> <indent>enter into peace;</indent> <indent>they find rest<cr>2</cr> as they lie in death.</indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 57:2

“But you—come here, you children of a sorceress,<cr>1</cr> <indent>you offspring of adulterers<cr>2</cr> and prostitutes!<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 57:3

Who are you mocking? <indent>At whom do you sneer</indent> <indent>and stick out your tongue?</indent> Are you not a brood of rebels,<cr>1</cr> <indent>the offspring of liars?</indent>

Isaiah 57:4

You burn with lust among the oaks<cr>1</cr> <indent>and under every spreading tree;<cr>2</cr> </indent> you sacrifice your children<cr>3</cr> in the ravines <indent>and under the overhanging crags.</indent>

Isaiah 57:5

The idols<cr>1</cr> among the smooth stones of the ravines are your portion; <indent>indeed, they are your lot.</indent> Yes, to them you have poured out drink offerings<cr>2</cr> <indent>and offered grain offerings.</indent> <indent>In view of all this, should I relent?<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 57:6

You have made your bed on a high and lofty hill;<cr>1</cr> <indent>there you went up to offer your sacrifices.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 57:7

Behind your doors and your doorposts <indent>you have put your pagan symbols.</indent> Forsaking me, you uncovered your bed, <indent>you climbed into it and opened it wide;</indent> you made a pact with those whose beds you love,<cr>1</cr> <indent>and you looked with lust on their naked bodies.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 57:8

You went to Molek<ft>1</ft><cr>1</cr> with olive oil <indent>and increased your perfumes.<cr>2</cr> </indent> You sent your ambassadors<ft>2</ft><cr>3</cr> far away; <indent>you descended to the very realm of the dead!<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 57:9

You wearied<cr>1</cr> yourself by such going about, <indent>but you would not say, ‘It is hopeless.’<cr>2</cr> </indent> You found renewal of your strength,<cr>3</cr> <indent>and so you did not faint.</indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 57:10

“Whom have you so dreaded and feared<cr>1</cr> <indent>that you have not been true to me,</indent> and have neither remembered<cr>2</cr> me <indent>nor taken this to heart?<cr>3</cr> </indent> Is it not because I have long been silent<cr>4</cr> <indent>that you do not fear me?</indent>

Isaiah 57:11

I will expose your righteousness and your works,<cr>1</cr> <indent>and they will not benefit you.</indent>

Isaiah 57:12

When you cry out<cr>1</cr> for help, <indent>let your collection of idols save<cr>2</cr> you!</indent> The wind will carry all of them off, <indent>a mere breath will blow<cr>3</cr> them away.</indent> But whoever takes refuge<cr>4</cr> in me <indent>will inherit the land<cr>5</cr> </indent> <indent>and possess my holy mountain.”<cr>6</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 57:13

Isaiah 57:14

And it will be said:<pb/><poetry>“Build up, build up, prepare the road!<cr>1</cr> <indent>Remove the obstacles out of the way of my people.”<cr>2</cr> </indent>

For this is what the high and exalted<cr>1</cr> One says— <indent>he who lives forever,<cr>2</cr> whose name is holy:</indent> “I live in a high<cr>3</cr> and holy place, <indent>but also with the one who is contrite<cr>4</cr> and lowly in spirit,<cr>5</cr> </indent> to revive the spirit of the lowly <indent>and to revive the heart of the contrite.<cr>6</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 57:15

I will not accuse<cr>1</cr> them forever, <indent>nor will I always be angry,<cr>2</cr> </indent> for then they would faint away because of me— <indent>the very people<cr>3</cr> I have created.</indent>

Isaiah 57:16

I was enraged by their sinful greed;<cr>1</cr> <indent>I punished them, and hid<cr>2</cr> my face in anger,</indent> <indent>yet they kept on in their willful ways.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 57:17

I have seen their ways, but I will heal<cr>1</cr> them; <indent>I will guide<cr>2</cr> them and restore comfort<cr>3</cr> to Israel’s mourners,</indent>

Isaiah 57:18

creating praise on their lips.<cr>1</cr> </indent> Peace, peace,<cr>2</cr> to those far and near,”<cr>3</cr> <indent>says the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>. “And I will heal them.”</indent>

Isaiah 57:19

But the wicked<cr>1</cr> are like the tossing sea,<cr>2</cr> <indent>which cannot rest,</indent> <indent>whose waves cast up mire<cr>3</cr> and mud.</indent>

Isaiah 57:20

“There is no peace,”<cr>1</cr> says my God, “for the wicked.”<cr>2</cr>

Isaiah 57:21

Isaiah 58:1

“Shout it aloud,<cr>1</cr> do not hold back. <indent>Raise your voice like a trumpet.<cr>2</cr> </indent> Declare to my people their rebellion<cr>3</cr> <indent>and to the descendants of Jacob their sins.<cr>4</cr> </indent>

For day after day they seek<cr>1</cr> me out; <indent>they seem eager to know my ways,</indent> as if they were a nation that does what is right <indent>and has not forsaken<cr>2</cr> the commands of its God.</indent> They ask me for just decisions <indent>and seem eager for God to come near<cr>3</cr> them.</indent>

Isaiah 58:2

‘Why have we fasted,’<cr>1</cr> they say, <indent>‘and you have not seen it?</indent> Why have we humbled<cr>2</cr> ourselves, <indent>and you have not noticed?’<cr>3</cr> </indent><pb/><poetry>“Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please<cr>4</cr> <indent>and exploit all your workers.</indent>

Isaiah 58:3

Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife,<cr>1</cr> <indent>and in striking each other with wicked fists.</indent> You cannot fast as you do today <indent>and expect your voice to be heard<cr>2</cr> on high.</indent>

Isaiah 58:4

Is this the kind of fast<cr>1</cr> I have chosen, <indent>only a day for people to humble<cr>2</cr> themselves?</indent> Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed<cr>3</cr> <indent>and for lying in sackcloth and ashes?<cr>4</cr> </indent> Is that what you call a fast, <indent>a day acceptable to the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>?</indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 58:5

“Is not this the kind of fasting<cr>1</cr> I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice<cr>2</cr> <indent>and untie the cords of the yoke,</indent> to set the oppressed<cr>3</cr> free <indent>and break every yoke?<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 58:6

Is it not to share your food with the hungry<cr>1</cr> <indent>and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter<cr>2</cr> —</indent> when you see the naked, to clothe<cr>3</cr> them, <indent>and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 58:7

Then your light will break forth like the dawn,<cr>1</cr> <indent>and your healing<cr>2</cr> will quickly appear;</indent> then your righteousness<ft>1</ft><cr>3</cr> will go before you, <indent>and the glory of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> will be your rear guard.<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 58:8

Then you will call,<cr>1</cr> and the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> will answer;<cr>2</cr> <indent>you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.</indent><pb/><poetry>“If you do away with the yoke of oppression, <indent>with the pointing finger<cr>3</cr> and malicious talk,<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 58:9

and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry <indent>and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,<cr>1</cr> </indent> then your light<cr>2</cr> will rise in the darkness, <indent>and your night will become like the noonday.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 58:10

The <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> will guide<cr>1</cr> you always; <indent>he will satisfy your needs<cr>2</cr> in a sun-scorched land<cr>3</cr> </indent> <indent>and will strengthen<cr>4</cr> your frame.</indent> You will be like a well-watered garden,<cr>5</cr> <indent>like a spring<cr>6</cr> whose waters never fail.</indent>

Isaiah 58:11

Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins<cr>1</cr> <indent>and will raise up the age-old foundations;<cr>2</cr> </indent> you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,<cr>3</cr> <indent>Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.</indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 58:12

“If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath<cr>1</cr> <indent>and from doing as you please on my holy day,</indent> if you call the Sabbath a delight<cr>2</cr> <indent>and the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>’s holy day honorable,</indent> and if you honor it by not going your own way <indent>and not doing as you please or speaking idle words,<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 58:13

then you will find your joy<cr>1</cr> in the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, <indent>and I will cause you to ride in triumph on the heights<cr>2</cr> of the land</indent> <indent>and to feast on the inheritance<cr>3</cr> of your father Jacob.”</indent> For the mouth of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> has spoken.<cr>4</cr>

Isaiah 58:14

Isaiah 59:1

Surely the arm<cr>1</cr> of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> is not too short<cr>2</cr> to save, <indent>nor his ear too dull to hear.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

But your iniquities have separated<cr>1</cr> <indent>you from your God;</indent> your sins have hidden his face from you, <indent>so that he will not hear.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 59:2

For your hands are stained with blood,<cr>1</cr> <indent>your fingers with guilt.<cr>2</cr> </indent> Your lips have spoken falsely,<cr>3</cr> <indent>and your tongue mutters wicked things.</indent>

Isaiah 59:3

No one calls for justice;<cr>1</cr> <indent>no one pleads a case with integrity.</indent> They rely<cr>2</cr> on empty arguments, they utter lies;<cr>3</cr> <indent>they conceive trouble and give birth to evil.<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 59:4

They hatch the eggs of vipers<cr>1</cr> <indent>and spin a spider’s web.<cr>2</cr> </indent> Whoever eats their eggs will die, <indent>and when one is broken, an adder is hatched.</indent>

Isaiah 59:5

Their cobwebs are useless for clothing; <indent>they cannot cover themselves with what they make.<cr>1</cr> </indent> Their deeds are evil deeds, <indent>and acts of violence<cr>2</cr> are in their hands.</indent>

Isaiah 59:6

Their feet rush into sin; <indent>they are swift to shed innocent blood.<cr>1</cr> </indent> They pursue evil schemes;<cr>2</cr> <indent>acts of violence mark their ways.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 59:7

The way of peace they do not know;<cr>1</cr> <indent>there is no justice in their paths.</indent> They have turned them into crooked roads;<cr>2</cr> <indent>no one who walks along them will know peace.<cr>3</cr> </indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 59:8

So justice is far from us, <indent>and righteousness does not reach us.</indent> We look for light, but all is darkness;<cr>1</cr> <indent>for brightness, but we walk in deep shadows.</indent>

Isaiah 59:9

Like the blind<cr>1</cr> we grope along the wall, <indent>feeling our way like people without eyes.</indent> At midday we stumble<cr>2</cr> as if it were twilight; <indent>among the strong, we are like the dead.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 59:10

We all growl like bears; <indent>we moan mournfully like doves.<cr>1</cr> </indent> We look for justice, but find none; <indent>for deliverance, but it is far away.</indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 59:11

For our offenses<cr>1</cr> are many in your sight, <indent>and our sins testify<cr>2</cr> against us.</indent> Our offenses are ever with us, <indent>and we acknowledge our iniquities:<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 59:12

rebellion<cr>1</cr> and treachery against the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, <indent>turning our backs<cr>2</cr> on our God,</indent> inciting revolt and oppression,<cr>3</cr> <indent>uttering lies<cr>4</cr> our hearts have conceived.</indent>

Isaiah 59:13

So justice<cr>1</cr> is driven back, <indent>and righteousness<cr>2</cr> stands at a distance;</indent> truth<cr>3</cr> has stumbled in the streets, <indent>honesty cannot enter.</indent>

Isaiah 59:14

Truth<cr>1</cr> is nowhere to be found, <indent>and whoever shuns evil becomes a prey.</indent><pb/><poetry>The <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> looked and was displeased <indent>that there was no justice.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 59:15

He saw that there was no one,<cr>1</cr> <indent>he was appalled that there was no one to intervene;<cr>2</cr> </indent> so his own arm achieved salvation<cr>3</cr> for him, <indent>and his own righteousness<cr>4</cr> sustained him.</indent>

Isaiah 59:16

He put on righteousness as his breastplate,<cr>1</cr> <indent>and the helmet<cr>2</cr> of salvation on his head;</indent> he put on the garments<cr>3</cr> of vengeance<cr>4</cr> <indent>and wrapped himself in zeal<cr>5</cr> as in a cloak.</indent>

Isaiah 59:17

According to what they have done, <indent>so will he repay<cr>1</cr> </indent> wrath to his enemies <indent>and retribution to his foes;</indent> <indent>he will repay the islands<cr>2</cr> their due.</indent>

Isaiah 59:18

From the west,<cr>1</cr> people will fear the name of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, <indent>and from the rising of the sun,<cr>2</cr> they will revere his glory.<cr>3</cr> </indent> For he will come like a pent-up flood <indent>that the breath<cr>4</cr> of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> drives along.<ft>1</ft></indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 59:19

“The Redeemer<cr>1</cr> will come to Zion,<cr>2</cr> <indent>to those in Jacob who repent of their sins,”<cr>3</cr> </indent> declares the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>.

Isaiah 59:20

“As for me, this is my covenant<cr>1</cr> with them,” says the Lord. “My Spirit,<cr>2</cr> who is on you, will not depart from you,<cr>3</cr> and my words that I have put in your mouth<cr>4</cr> will always be on your lips, on the lips of your children and on the lips of their descendants—from this time on and forever,” says the Lord.

Isaiah 59:21

Isaiah 60:1

“Arise,<cr>1</cr> shine, for your light<cr>2</cr> has come, <indent>and the glory<cr>3</cr> of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> rises upon you.</indent>

See, darkness<cr>1</cr> covers the earth <indent>and thick darkness<cr>2</cr> is over the peoples,</indent> but the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> rises upon you <indent>and his glory appears over you.</indent>

Isaiah 60:2

Nations<cr>1</cr> will come to your light,<cr>2</cr> <indent>and kings<cr>3</cr> to the brightness of your dawn.</indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 60:3

“Lift up your eyes and look about you: <indent>All assemble<cr>1</cr> and come to you;</indent> your sons come from afar,<cr>2</cr> <indent>and your daughters<cr>3</cr> are carried on the hip.<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 60:4

Then you will look and be radiant,<cr>1</cr> <indent>your heart will throb and swell with joy;<cr>2</cr> </indent> the wealth<cr>3</cr> on the seas will be brought to you, <indent>to you the riches of the nations will come.</indent>

Isaiah 60:5

Herds of camels<cr>1</cr> will cover your land, <indent>young camels of Midian<cr>2</cr> and Ephah.<cr>3</cr> </indent> And all from Sheba<cr>4</cr> will come, <indent>bearing gold and incense<cr>5</cr> </indent> <indent>and proclaiming the praise<cr>6</cr> of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>.</indent>

Isaiah 60:6

All Kedar’s<cr>1</cr> flocks will be gathered to you, <indent>the rams of Nebaioth will serve you;</indent> they will be accepted as offerings<cr>2</cr> on my altar,<cr>3</cr> <indent>and I will adorn my glorious temple.<cr>4</cr> </indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 60:7

“Who are these<cr>1</cr> that fly along like clouds,<cr>2</cr> <indent>like doves to their nests?</indent>

Isaiah 60:8

Surely the islands<cr>1</cr> look to me; <indent>in the lead are the ships of Tarshish,<ft>1</ft><cr>2</cr> </indent> bringing<cr>3</cr> your children from afar, <indent>with their silver and gold,<cr>4</cr> </indent> to the honor<cr>5</cr> of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> your God, <indent>the Holy One<cr>6</cr> of Israel,</indent> <indent>for he has endowed you with splendor.<cr>7</cr> </indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 60:9

“Foreigners<cr>1</cr> will rebuild your walls, <indent>and their kings<cr>2</cr> will serve you.</indent> Though in anger I struck you, <indent>in favor<cr>3</cr> I will show you compassion.<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 60:10

Your gates<cr>1</cr> will always stand open, <indent>they will never be shut, day or night,</indent> so that people may bring you the wealth of the nations<cr>2</cr> — <indent>their kings<cr>3</cr> led in triumphal procession.</indent>

Isaiah 60:11

For the nation or kingdom that will not serve<cr>1</cr> you will perish; <indent>it will be utterly ruined.<cr>2</cr> </indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 60:12

“The glory of Lebanon<cr>1</cr> will come to you, <indent>the juniper, the fir and the cypress together,<cr>2</cr> </indent> to adorn my sanctuary;<cr>3</cr> <indent>and I will glorify the place for my feet.<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 60:13

The children of your oppressors<cr>1</cr> will come bowing before you; <indent>all who despise you will bow down<cr>2</cr> at your feet</indent> and will call you the City<cr>3</cr> of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, <indent>Zion<cr>4</cr> of the Holy One<cr>5</cr> of Israel.</indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 60:14

“Although you have been forsaken<cr>1</cr> and hated, <indent>with no one traveling<cr>2</cr> through,</indent> I will make you the everlasting pride<cr>3</cr> <indent>and the joy<cr>4</cr> of all generations.</indent>

Isaiah 60:15

You will drink the milk of nations <indent>and be nursed<cr>1</cr> at royal breasts.</indent> Then you will know<cr>2</cr> that I, the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, am your Savior,<cr>3</cr> <indent>your Redeemer,<cr>4</cr> the Mighty One of Jacob.<cr>5</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 60:16

Instead of bronze I will bring you gold,<cr>1</cr> <indent>and silver in place of iron.</indent> Instead of wood I will bring you bronze, <indent>and iron in place of stones.</indent> I will make peace<cr>2</cr> your governor <indent>and well-being your ruler.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 60:17

No longer will violence<cr>1</cr> be heard in your land, <indent>nor ruin or destruction<cr>2</cr> within your borders,</indent> but you will call your walls Salvation<cr>3</cr> <indent>and your gates Praise.<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 60:18

The sun will no more be your light by day, <indent>nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you,</indent> for the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> will be your everlasting light,<cr>1</cr> <indent>and your God will be your glory.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 60:19

Your sun<cr>1</cr> will never set again, <indent>and your moon will wane no more;</indent> the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> will be your everlasting light, <indent>and your days of sorrow<cr>2</cr> will end.</indent>

Isaiah 60:20

Then all your people will be righteous<cr>1</cr> <indent>and they will possess<cr>2</cr> the land forever.</indent> They are the shoot I have planted,<cr>3</cr> <indent>the work of my hands,<cr>4</cr> </indent> <indent>for the display of my splendor.<cr>5</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 60:21

The least of you will become a thousand, <indent>the smallest a mighty nation.<cr>1</cr> </indent> I am the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>; <indent>in its time I will do this swiftly.”<cr>2</cr> </indent>

The New International Version (NIV) is an English translation of the Bible first published in 1978 by Biblica (formerly the International Bible Society). The NIV was published to meet the need for a modern translation done by Bible scholars using the earliest, highest quality manuscripts available. Of equal importance was that the Bible be expressed in broadly understood modern English.
