Ezekiel 33:1

“Son of man, speak to your people and say to them: ‘When I bring the sword<cr>1</cr>  against a land, and the people of the land choose one of their men and make him their watchman,<cr>2</cr> 

Ezekiel 33:2

and he sees the sword coming against the land and blows the trumpet<cr>1</cr>  to warn the people,

Ezekiel 33:3

then if anyone hears the trumpet but does not heed the warning<cr>1</cr>  and the sword comes and takes their life, their blood will be on their own head.<cr>2</cr> 

Ezekiel 33:4

Since they heard the sound of the trumpet but did not heed the warning, their blood will be on their own head.<cr>1</cr>  If they had heeded the warning, they would have saved themselves.<cr>2</cr> 

Ezekiel 33:5

But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes someone’s life, that person’s life will be taken because of their sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for their blood.’<cr>1</cr> 

Ezekiel 33:6

“Son of man, I have made you a watchman<cr>1</cr>  for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me.<cr>2</cr> 

Ezekiel 33:7

When I say to the wicked, ‘You wicked person, you will surely die,<cr>1</cr> ’ and you do not speak out to dissuade them from their ways, that wicked person will die for<ft>1</ft> their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood.<cr>2</cr> 

Ezekiel 33:8

But if you do warn the wicked person to turn from their ways and they do not do so,<cr>1</cr>  they will die for their sin, though you yourself will be saved.<cr>2</cr> 

Ezekiel 33:9

“Son of man, say to the Israelites, ‘This is what you are saying: “Our offenses and sins weigh us down, and we are wasting away<cr>1</cr>  because of<ft>1</ft> them. How then can we live?<cr>2</cr> ”’

Ezekiel 33:10

Say to them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live.<cr>1</cr>  Turn!<cr>2</cr>  Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die, people of Israel?’<cr>3</cr> 

Ezekiel 33:11

“Therefore, son of man, say to your people,<cr>1</cr>  ‘If someone who is righteous disobeys, that person’s former righteousness will count for nothing. And if someone who is wicked repents, that person’s former wickedness will not bring condemnation. The righteous person who sins will not be allowed to live even though they were formerly righteous.’<cr>2</cr> 

Ezekiel 33:12

If I tell a righteous person that they will surely live, but then they trust in their righteousness and do evil, none of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered; they will die for the evil they have done.<cr>1</cr> 

Ezekiel 33:13

And if I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ but they then turn away from their sin and do what is just<cr>1</cr>  and right—

Ezekiel 33:14

if they give back what they took in pledge<cr>1</cr>  for a loan, return what they have stolen,<cr>2</cr>  follow the decrees that give life, and do no evil—that person will surely live; they will not die.<cr>3</cr> 

Ezekiel 33:15

None of the sins<cr>1</cr>  that person has committed will be remembered against them. They have done what is just and right; they will surely live.<cr>2</cr> 

Ezekiel 33:16

“Yet your people say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ But it is their way that is not just.

Ezekiel 33:17

If a righteous person turns from their righteousness and does evil,<cr>1</cr>  they will die for it.<cr>2</cr>

And if a wicked person turns away from their wickedness and does what is just and right, they will live by doing so.<cr>1</cr> 

Ezekiel 33:19

Yet you Israelites say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ But I will judge each of you according to your own ways.”<cr>1</cr>

In the twelfth year of our exile, in the tenth month on the fifth day, a man who had escaped<cr>1</cr>  from Jerusalem came to me and said, “The city has fallen!<cr>2</cr> ”

Now the evening before the man arrived, the hand of the Lord was on me,<cr>1</cr>  and he opened my mouth<cr>2</cr>  before the man came to me in the morning. So my mouth was opened and I was no longer silent.<cr>3</cr> 

Ezekiel 33:22

Ezekiel 33:23

“Son of man, the people living in those ruins<cr>1</cr>  in the land of Israel are saying, ‘Abraham was only one man, yet he possessed the land. But we are many;<cr>2</cr>  surely the land has been given to us as our possession.’<cr>3</cr> 

Ezekiel 33:24

Therefore say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Since you eat<cr>1</cr>  meat with the blood<cr>2</cr>  still in it and look to your idols and shed blood, should you then possess the land?<cr>3</cr> 

Ezekiel 33:25

You rely on your sword, you do detestable things,<cr>1</cr>  and each of you defiles his neighbor’s wife.<cr>2</cr>  Should you then possess the land?’

Ezekiel 33:26

“Say this to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: As surely as I live, those who are left in the ruins will fall by the sword, those out in the country I will give to the wild animals to be devoured, and those in strongholds and caves will die of a plague.<cr>1</cr> 

Ezekiel 33:27

I will make the land a desolate waste, and her proud strength will come to an end, and the mountains<cr>1</cr>  of Israel will become desolate so that no one will cross them.<cr>2</cr> 

Ezekiel 33:28

Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I have made the land a desolate<cr>1</cr>  waste because of all the detestable things they have done.’<cr>2</cr>

“As for you, son of man, your people are talking together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, saying to each other, ‘Come and hear the message that has come from the Lord.’

My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before<cr>1</cr>  you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy<cr>2</cr>  for unjust gain.<cr>3</cr> 

Ezekiel 33:31

Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs<cr>1</cr>  with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well, for they hear your words but do not put them into practice.<cr>2</cr>

“When all this comes true—and it surely will—then they will know that a prophet has been among them.<cr>1</cr> ”

Ezekiel 34:1

“Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Woe to you shepherds of Israel who only take care of yourselves! Should not shepherds take care of the flock?<cr>1</cr> 

Ezekiel 34:2

You eat the curds, clothe yourselves with the wool and slaughter the choice animals, but you do not take care of the flock.<cr>1</cr> 

Ezekiel 34:3

You have not strengthened the weak or healed<cr>1</cr>  the sick or bound up<cr>2</cr>  the injured. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost. You have ruled them harshly and brutally.<cr>3</cr> 

Ezekiel 34:4

So they were scattered because there was no shepherd,<cr>1</cr>  and when they were scattered they became food for all the wild animals.<cr>2</cr> 

Ezekiel 34:5

My sheep wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill.<cr>1</cr>  They were scattered<cr>2</cr>  over the whole earth, and no one searched or looked for them.<cr>3</cr>

“‘Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord:

Ezekiel 34:7

As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, because my flock lacks a shepherd and so has been plundered<cr>1</cr>  and has become food for all the wild animals,<cr>2</cr>  and because my shepherds did not search for my flock but cared for themselves rather than for my flock,<cr>3</cr> 

Ezekiel 34:8

therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord:

Ezekiel 34:9

This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against<cr>1</cr>  the shepherds and will hold them accountable for my flock. I will remove them from tending the flock so that the shepherds can no longer feed themselves. I will rescue<cr>2</cr>  my flock from their mouths, and it will no longer be food for them.<cr>3</cr> 

Ezekiel 34:10

“‘For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will search for my sheep<cr>1</cr>  and look after them.

Ezekiel 34:11

As a shepherd<cr>1</cr>  looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness.<cr>2</cr> 

Ezekiel 34:12

I will bring them out from the nations and gather<cr>1</cr>  them from the countries, and I will bring them into their own land.<cr>2</cr>  I will pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines and in all the settlements in the land.<cr>3</cr> 

Ezekiel 34:13

I will tend them in a good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel<cr>1</cr>  will be their grazing land. There they will lie down in good grazing land, and there they will feed in a rich pasture<cr>2</cr>  on the mountains of Israel.<cr>3</cr> 

Ezekiel 34:14

I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down,<cr>1</cr>  declares the Sovereign Lord.<cr>2</cr> 

Ezekiel 34:15

I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up<cr>1</cr>  the injured and strengthen the weak,<cr>2</cr>  but the sleek and the strong I will destroy.<cr>3</cr>  I will shepherd the flock with justice.<cr>4</cr> 

Ezekiel 34:16

“‘As for you, my flock, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will judge between one sheep and another, and between rams and goats.<cr>1</cr>

Is it not enough<cr>1</cr>  for you to feed on the good pasture? Must you also trample the rest of your pasture with your feet?<cr>2</cr>  Is it not enough for you to drink clear water? Must you also muddy the rest with your feet?

Ezekiel 34:18

Must my flock feed on what you have trampled and drink what you have muddied with your feet?

Ezekiel 34:19

“‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says to them: See, I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep.<cr>1</cr>

Because you shove with flank and shoulder, butting all the weak sheep with your horns<cr>1</cr>  until you have driven them away,

Ezekiel 34:21

I will save my flock, and they will no longer be plundered. I will judge between one sheep and another.<cr>1</cr> 

Ezekiel 34:22

I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend<cr>1</cr>  them; he will tend them and be their shepherd.<cr>2</cr> 

Ezekiel 34:23

I the Lord will be their God,<cr>1</cr>  and my servant David<cr>2</cr>  will be prince among them.<cr>3</cr>  I the Lord have spoken.<cr>4</cr>

“‘I will make a covenant<cr>1</cr>  of peace<cr>2</cr>  with them and rid the land of savage beasts<cr>3</cr>  so that they may live in the wilderness and sleep in the forests in safety.<cr>4</cr> 

Ezekiel 34:25

I will make them and the places surrounding my hill a blessing.<ft>1</ft><cr>1</cr>  I will send down showers in season;<cr>2</cr>  there will be showers of blessing.<cr>3</cr>

The trees will yield their fruit<cr>1</cr>  and the ground will yield its crops;<cr>2</cr>  the people will be secure<cr>3</cr>  in their land. They will know that I am the Lord, when I break the bars of their yoke<cr>4</cr>  and rescue them from the hands of those who enslaved them.<cr>5</cr> 

Ezekiel 34:27

They will no longer be plundered by the nations, nor will wild animals devour them. They will live in safety,<cr>1</cr>  and no one will make them afraid.<cr>2</cr> 

Ezekiel 34:28

I will provide for them a land renowned<cr>1</cr>  for its crops, and they will no longer be victims of famine<cr>2</cr>  in the land or bear the scorn<cr>3</cr>  of the nations.<cr>4</cr> 

Ezekiel 34:29

Then they will know that I, the Lord their God, am with them and that they, the Israelites, are my people, declares the Sovereign Lord.<cr>1</cr> 

Ezekiel 34:30

You are my sheep,<cr>1</cr>  the sheep of my pasture,<cr>2</cr>  and I am your God, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”

Ezekiel 34:31

Ezekiel 35:1

“Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir;<cr>1</cr>  prophesy against it

Ezekiel 35:2

and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Mount Seir, and I will stretch out my hand<cr>1</cr>  against you and make you a desolate waste.<cr>2</cr> 

Ezekiel 35:3

I will turn your towns into ruins<cr>1</cr>  and you will be desolate. Then you will know that I am the Lord.<cr>2</cr> 

Ezekiel 35:4

“‘Because you harbored an ancient hostility and delivered the Israelites over to the sword<cr>1</cr>  at the time of their calamity,<cr>2</cr>  the time their punishment reached its climax,<cr>3</cr>

therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will give you over to bloodshed<cr>1</cr>  and it will pursue you.<cr>2</cr>  Since you did not hate bloodshed, bloodshed will pursue you.

Ezekiel 35:6

I will make Mount Seir a desolate waste<cr>1</cr>  and cut off from it all who come and go.<cr>2</cr> 

Ezekiel 35:7

I will fill your mountains with the slain; those killed by the sword will fall on your hills and in your valleys and in all your ravines.<cr>1</cr> 

Ezekiel 35:8

I will make you desolate forever;<cr>1</cr>  your towns will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the Lord.<cr>2</cr>

“‘Because you have said, “These two nations and countries will be ours and we will take possession<cr>1</cr>  of them,” even though I the Lord was there,

therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will treat you in accordance with the anger<cr>1</cr>  and jealousy you showed in your hatred of them and I will make myself known among them when I judge you.<cr>2</cr>

Then you will know that I the Lord have heard all the contemptible things you have said against the mountains of Israel. You said, “They have been laid waste and have been given over to us to devour.<cr>1</cr> ”

Ezekiel 35:12

You boasted<cr>1</cr>  against me and spoke against me without restraint, and I heard it.<cr>2</cr> 

Ezekiel 35:13

This is what the Sovereign Lord says: While the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate.<cr>1</cr> 

Ezekiel 35:14

Because you rejoiced<cr>1</cr>  when the inheritance of Israel became desolate, that is how I will treat you. You will be desolate, Mount Seir,<cr>2</cr>  you and all of Edom.<cr>3</cr>  Then they will know that I am the Lord.’”

Ezekiel 36:1

“Son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel<cr>1</cr>  and say, ‘Mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord.

This is what the Sovereign Lord says:<cr>1</cr>  The enemy said of you, “Aha!<cr>2</cr>  The ancient heights<cr>3</cr>  have become our possession.<cr>4</cr> ”’

Ezekiel 36:2

Therefore prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because they ravaged<cr>1</cr>  and crushed you from every side so that you became the possession of the rest of the nations and the object of people’s malicious talk and slander,<cr>2</cr> 

Ezekiel 36:3

therefore, mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Sovereign Lord: This is what the Sovereign Lord says to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys,<cr>1</cr>  to the desolate ruins<cr>2</cr>  and the deserted<cr>3</cr>  towns that have been plundered and ridiculed<cr>4</cr>  by the rest of the nations around you<cr>5</cr> —

Ezekiel 36:4

this is what the Sovereign Lord says: In my burning<cr>1</cr>  zeal I have spoken against the rest of the nations, and against all Edom, for with glee and with malice in their hearts they made my land their own possession so that they might plunder its pastureland.’<cr>2</cr> 

Ezekiel 36:5

Therefore prophesy concerning the land of Israel and say to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I speak in my jealous wrath because you have suffered the scorn of the nations.<cr>1</cr> 

Ezekiel 36:6

Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I swear with uplifted hand<cr>1</cr>  that the nations around you will also suffer scorn.<cr>2</cr> 

Ezekiel 36:7

“‘But you, mountains of Israel, will produce branches and fruit<cr>1</cr>  for my people Israel, for they will soon come home.

Ezekiel 36:8

I am concerned for you and will look on you with favor; you will be plowed and sown,<cr>1</cr> 

Ezekiel 36:9

and I will cause many people to live on you—yes, all of Israel. The towns will be inhabited and the ruins<cr>1</cr>  rebuilt.<cr>2</cr> 

Ezekiel 36:10

I will increase the number of people and animals living on you, and they will be fruitful<cr>1</cr>  and become numerous. I will settle people<cr>2</cr>  on you as in the past<cr>3</cr>  and will make you prosper more than before.<cr>4</cr>  Then you will know that I am the Lord.

Ezekiel 36:11

I will cause people, my people Israel, to live on you. They will possess you, and you will be their inheritance;<cr>1</cr>  you will never again deprive them of their children.

Ezekiel 36:12

“‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because some say to you, “You devour people<cr>1</cr>  and deprive your nation of its children,”

Ezekiel 36:13

therefore you will no longer devour people or make your nation childless, declares the Sovereign Lord.

Ezekiel 36:14

No longer will I make you hear the taunts of the nations, and no longer will you suffer the scorn of the peoples or cause your nation to fall, declares the Sovereign Lord.<cr>1</cr> ’”
