<h3>A Prophecy Against Babylon</h3>13 A prophecy against Babylon that Isaiah son of Amoz saw: <poetry> 2 <poetry>Raise a banner on a bare hilltop, <indent>shout to them;</indent> beckon to them <indent>to enter the gates of the nobles.</indent> </poetry> 3 <poetry>I have commanded those I prepared for battle; <indent>I have summoned my warriors to carry out my wrath —</indent> <indent>those who rejoice in my triumph.</indent><poetry></poetry> 4 <poetry>Listen, a noise on the mountains, <indent>like that of a great multitude! </indent> Listen, an uproar among the kingdoms, <indent>like nations massing together!</indent> The <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> Almighty is mustering <indent>an army for war.</indent> </poetry> 5 <poetry>They come from faraway lands, <indent>from the ends of the heavens —</indent> the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> and the weapons of his wrath — <indent>to destroy the whole country.</indent><poetry></poetry> 6 <poetry>Wail, for the day of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> is near; <indent>it will come like destruction from the Almighty. </indent> </poetry> 7 <poetry>Because of this, all hands will go limp, <indent>every heart will melt with fear. </indent> </poetry> 8 <poetry>Terror will seize them, <indent>pain and anguish will grip them;</indent> <indent>they will writhe like a woman in labor. </indent> They will look aghast at each other, <indent>their faces aflame. </indent><poetry></poetry> 9 <poetry>See, the day of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> is coming <indent>—a cruel day, with wrath and fierce anger —</indent> to make the land desolate <indent>and destroy the sinners within it.</indent> </poetry> 10 <poetry>The stars of heaven and their constellations <indent>will not show their light. </indent> The rising sun will be darkened <indent>and the moon will not give its light. </indent> </poetry> 11 <poetry>I will punish the world for its evil, <indent>the wicked for their sins.</indent> I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty <indent>and will humble the pride of the ruthless. </indent> </poetry> 12 <poetry>I will make people scarcer than pure gold, <indent>more rare than the gold of Ophir. </indent> </poetry> 13 <poetry>Therefore I will make the heavens tremble; <indent>and the earth will shake from its place</indent> at the wrath of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> Almighty, <indent>in the day of his burning anger. </indent><poetry></poetry> 14 <poetry>Like a hunted gazelle, <indent>like sheep without a shepherd, </indent> they will all return to their own people, <indent>they will flee to their native land. </indent> </poetry> 15 <poetry>Whoever is captured will be thrust through; <indent>all who are caught will fall by the sword. </indent> </poetry> 16 <poetry>Their infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; <indent>their houses will be looted and their wives violated. </indent><poetry></poetry> 17 <poetry>See, I will stir up against them the Medes, <indent>who do not care for silver</indent> <indent>and have no delight in gold. </indent> </poetry> 18 <poetry>Their bows will strike down the young men; <indent>they will have no mercy on infants,</indent> <indent>nor will they look with compassion on children. </indent> </poetry> 19 <poetry>Babylon, the jewel of kingdoms, <indent>the pride and glory of the Babylonians, </indent> will be overthrown by God <indent>like Sodom and Gomorrah. </indent> </poetry> 20 <poetry>She will never be inhabited <indent>or lived in through all generations;</indent> there no nomads will pitch their tents, <indent>there no shepherds will rest their flocks.</indent> </poetry> 21 <poetry>But desert creatures will lie there, <indent>jackals will fill her houses;</indent> there the owls will dwell, <indent>and there the wild goats will leap about.</indent> </poetry> 22 <poetry>Hyenas will inhabit her strongholds, <indent>jackals her luxurious palaces.</indent> Her time is at hand, <indent>and her days will not be prolonged. </indent></poetry>
