<h3>A Prophecy Against Damascus</h3>17 A prophecy against Damascus: <poetry>“See, Damascus will no longer be a city <indent>but will become a heap of ruins. </indent> 2 <poetry>The cities of Aroer will be deserted <indent>and left to flocks, which will lie down, </indent> <indent>with no one to make them afraid. </indent> </poetry> 3 <poetry>The fortified city will disappear from Ephraim, <indent>and royal power from Damascus;</indent> the remnant of Aram will be <indent>like the glory of the Israelites,” </indent> declares the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> Almighty.<poetry></poetry> 4 <poetry>“In that day the glory of Jacob will fade; <indent>the fat of his body will waste away.</indent> </poetry> 5 <poetry>It will be as when reapers harvest the standing grain, <indent>gathering the grain in their arms—</indent> as when someone gleans heads of grain <indent>in the Valley of Rephaim. </indent> </poetry> 6 <poetry>Yet some gleanings will remain, <indent>as when an olive tree is beaten, </indent> leaving two or three olives on the topmost branches, <indent>four or five on the fruitful boughs,”</indent> declares the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, the God of Israel.<poetry></poetry> 7 <poetry>In that day people will look to their Maker <indent>and turn their eyes to the Holy One of Israel.</indent> </poetry> 8 <poetry>They will not look to the altars, <indent>the work of their hands, </indent> and they will have no regard for the Asherah poles <indent>and the incense altars their fingers have made.</indent></poetry> 9 In that day their strong cities, which they left because of the Israelites, will be like places abandoned to thickets and undergrowth. And all will be desolation.<poetry> 10 <poetry>You have forgotten God your Savior; <indent>you have not remembered the Rock, your fortress. </indent> Therefore, though you set out the finest plants <indent>and plant imported vines, </indent> </poetry> 11 <poetry>though on the day you set them out, you make them grow, <indent>and on the morning when you plant them, you bring them to bud,</indent> yet the harvest will be as nothing <indent>in the day of disease and incurable pain. </indent><poetry></poetry> 12 <poetry>Woe to the many nations that rage — <indent>they rage like the raging sea! </indent> Woe to the peoples who roar — <indent>they roar like the roaring of great waters! </indent> </poetry> 13 <poetry>Although the peoples roar like the roar of surging waters, <indent>when he rebukes them they flee far away,</indent> driven before the wind like chaff on the hills, <indent>like tumbleweed before a gale. </indent> </poetry> 14 <poetry>In the evening, sudden terror! <indent>Before the morning, they are gone! </indent> This is the portion of those who loot us, <indent>the lot of those who plunder us.</indent></poetry>
