È una antologia di passi agostiniani intorno a Maria. La Vergine occupa una posizione di primo piano nella meditazione teologica e nella parenesi pastorale di Agostino, tanto che si può dire che la sostanza del culto cattolico trova nell'opera agostiniana una delle più convinte e calde affermazioni. Una densa introduzione di Pellegrino orienta il lettore sul pensiero di Agostino sulla Vergine, quale risulta dai testi, che seguono, tratti da varie opere e numerati con riferimento alle fonti. Arricchisce il testo l'indice analitico, l'indice delle fonti con riferimento alle edizioni critiche e una selezionata bibliografia, specifica del tema trattato. Il testo è preceduto da una presentazione di Eugenio Corsini, successore di Pellegrino alla cattedra di Torino: egli illustra l'opera di Pellegrino, specialmente come studioso di Agostino.

Augustine was one of the most prolific Latin authors in terms of surviving works, and the list of his works consists of more than a hundred separate titles.
Augustine took the view that the Biblical text should not be interpreted literally if it contradicts what we know from science and our God-given reason. Many Protestants, especially Calvinists, consider him to be one of the theological fathers of Reformation teaching on salvation and divine grace.
