‘And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple, blessing God.’ Luke’s closing words set us in expectancy for what is to follow. They now fully recognised Him for Who and What He was, and they worshipped Him. Luke almost certainly intends us to take that literally in the highest sense. ‘And it came to about that while he blessed them, he parted from them, and was carried up into heaven.’ And even while He was blessing them, He parted from them for the last time in bodily form, and was carried up into Heaven. This was the signal that His work on earth was done. The book of Acts will reveal what happened to Him next.
