On first glance, Solomon’s words in this proverb seem quite trite. Is he simply saying that when we get what we want, we are happy, but when we don’t, we aren’t? I don’t think so. Hidden behind the seeming simplicity of these few words is a profound truth about hope itself and the Bible’s teaching on it. One theologian said, “You’ve heard of the milk of the word and the meat of the word. Well, Proverbs is the hard candy of the Word. Sometimes we can be tempted to think that the work of missions totally depends on the amount of work that we are able to give. However, the salvation of souls primarily a work of God. We are fully dependent on the Lord to work in these ways as we proclaim the good news to the nations. Today we will be in the book of Proverbs again. And the theme of the day will be one of the major themes in Biblical wisdom literature and the Bible as a whole, the theme of “Fear of the Lord”. A quick reading of proverbs shows that the Fear of the Lord “is the beginning of knowledge” (1:7), requires diligent searching (2:4-6), is better than great treasure (15:16), and “leads to life” (19:23). Now, if the fear of the Lord is so important, isn’t this something we should seek to understand and pursue with great effort? But what is “the fear of the Lord”? And what about the thought that “fear is a negative thing that we should avoid, rather than promote”? Through our time together, we will prayerfully seek to understand that, “Living in the fear of the Lord is the wisest way to live."

Now, Paul isn’t using empty words in 1 Corinthians 9. He practices what he preaches. He has deferred his right to be paid. He has sacrificed money, companionship, and sometimes even bare necessities like food and water for the sake of the gospel. And in all this, he calls Christians to do the same. You see, if you want your life to impact others for the gospel, you have to set down your rights and freedoms. May the Lord help us relinquish our grip on things that are temporary so that we can advance that which is eternal. By God’s grace, let’s live for sake of the gospel.

To that segment of the church, Paul needed to emphasize divinely set boundaries for sex, and the spiritual importance of sexual morality. But the church at Corinth was not monolithic. It was complex and convoluted like many churches today. There was another portion of the congregation that held a very different view on sexuality. They were ascetic, championing an anti-sex, anti-marriage philosophy that was supposedly more spiritual and pleasing to God. To that part of the Corinthian church, Paul emphasized the goodness of marital sex and the blessedness of both marriage and singleness. While addressing a number of other subjects in 1 Corinthians 7, Paul encourages Christians to embrace the situation God has called them to, and bloom where they’re planted.

All our thoughts, attitudes, wants, fears, and resolutions are generated from one place—our hearts. He isn’t talking about the organ inside our chest that circulates life-giving blood to the various parts of our bodies. He is talking about the immaterial part of us that drives everything we do and say—the source of life itself. In other words, as goes our heart, so goes everything else. To neglect our heart then is to ignore the most vital things in this life. We can give our attention to everything else in life with great energy and success, but if we neglect our heart, we have missed what the most important thing of all. May God show us what it means to guard our hearts above all else, for from them flow the springs of life.

But the church is supposed to be an exception. The world’s wisdom has no place in the household of faith. Instead, God’s wisdom needs to guide and guard his people. In 1 Corinthians 3, Paul explains how the church is being formed by God like a farmer’s field, a building, or a holy temple. And yet, while God is constructing, there are those who are destructing. What God is forming others are deforming. And so, believers are called to remember all that we have in our union with Christ and remember that we ultimately belong to him.

So, it might appear that he is against knowledge or down on wisdom. But that is not the whole picture. Paul is not promoting a broad-brush rejection of wisdom. Instead, he is contrasting human wisdom with spiritual wisdom. Paul wants believers to understand that the wisdom of this age is insufficient and inept. But the wisdom from God, by means of his Spirit, brings growth and unity to the church. By God’s grace may we embrace spiritual wisdom and apply it in the church today.

But culturally-driven, man-centered philosophies of ministry will never get to the true gospel. Worldly wisdom will always see the crucified Christ as foolish and weak. Secular society craves a message that is flashier and more spectacular. So, Paul reminds the church of Corinth (and the church of today), that the gospel of Christ crucified is the power and wisdom of God. Though it’s scandalous from the world’s perspective, the cross of Christ is wiser and stronger than any human alternative. May the word of the cross be our centerpiece because it is the only message that can save.

The city of Corinth was characterized by new money and ambitious people. Merchants were amassing wealth, idolatry was embedded in the culture, and people were living for whatever made them happy. When the gospel broke into that city, lives began to change, and a church was formed. The word of the cross took root and citizens were washed and justified. The Corinthians became new creations in Christ. But that didn’t mean all their problems and past baggage just disappeared. After 18 months of ministry and a previous letter, Paul circles back with believers to encourage and admonish them in the faith. As we begin our journey through the book of 1 Corinthians, may the Lord do a deep work in our city church.
