In this world of sin, we may meet with people who are toxic and oppressive. Worse still, the wicked seem to prosper and hold a lot of power (Ps 37:35) while they seek to do evil to those who walk righteously and those poorer and weaker than them (Ps 37:14).

In his lifetime, King David suffered from many enemies. Through all these, God used him to pen down many psalms to encourage us who are facing such circumstances.

In Psalm 37, we learn four principles in dealing with situations where we have suffered much hurt from wicked people.

1. Trust in the LORD

“...fret not thyself”; it is easy for us to get worked up when we see the wicked succeed and the righteous suffer. Fretting does not bring joy or peace and by fretting, we lack trust in God’s faithfulness towards His own people. “Delight thyself also in the LORD”; instead of thinking of the evil committed against us, we should focus our minds on Jesus and His loveliness as we seek after God. In Christ, God is our eternal inheritance and we are heirs of heaven; only He can satisfy every part of our lives.

“Commit thy way unto the LORD”; we must cast all the cares of life into God’s hands (1Peter 5:7). Let Him handle our pain and trust Him as He guides our lives and the circumstances we face. God will eventually judge the wicked; vengeance belongs only to the LORD (Romans 12:19).

“Rest in the LORD”; we are to be silent before God and surrender ourselves in His loving hands. We can trust God that He is in control of all situations and has a divine purpose behind everything that He allows us to experience; all things will work out for our spiritual good (Romans 8:28).

2. God understands our situation

“The LORD knoweth...”; God knows us intimately and loves us. He understands the suffering that we endure.“For we have not an high priest (Jesus) which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities...”(Hebrews 4:15). God promises to uphold us with His grace and strength for each day, and we shall not be ashamed when we depend on Him (Psalm 25:2-3). God laughs at the wicked as He knows their end; the evil will perish like smoke and eternal damnation in hellfire awaits them who do not repent.

3. God provides and blesses

God will provide for all our needs and bless the righteous. “He is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed.” The righteous has all his needs provided by the Lord and has extra to give to others.
“For the LORD loveth judgment, and forsaketh not His saints...” God’s presence is constantly with us. With God for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31)

4. God will judge the wicked

God will thoroughly deal with the wicked and deliver the righteous.

“But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: He is their strength in the time of trouble. And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: He shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in Him.” (Psalm 37:39-40)

Be encouraged and fix your mind on Christ! Pray to God to help you forgive your enemies and heal you of all the hurt and pain. Pray for the power of God the Holy Spirit who dwells in you, to help you bravely live each day trusting in the Lord and relying on His strength for His glory (Zechariah 4:6).
