Why do bad things happen to God’s people? In this sin-cursed world, “time and chance (calamities, disappointments, unforeseen incidents) happeneth to them all”.
Our Sovereign God decrees all events in our lives and we cannot expect to be spared from trouble as long as we are in this imperfect world (John 16:33). The only time we will be free from all trials is when we reach our final destination, which is our Heavenly Father’s home in heaven (Revelation 21:4).
While God does not promise to spare us from the pains of life, He promises to always be there for us and to carry us through the storms of life (Isaiah 43:2).
The origin of pain and suffering in this world came about from sin which refers to disobeying God’s commandments. The benefit of being God’s people is that God will only allow circumstances that will not try us beyond our limits. Even if troubles seem overwhelming, He is there to give us more grace, more strength to go through each day (2Corinthians 12:9).
“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” (1Corinthians 10:13)
El Roi, the God who sees; nothing is hidden from God and He understands our every thought and
feeling. Jesus wept with Mary, although He knew He was going to raise Lazarus up from the dead (John 11:35). Why did He weep?“For we have not an high priest (Jesus) which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” (Hebrews 4:15) Our Almighty God is compassionate and kind; He grieves with us when we grieve and He will deliver us in His perfect timing for the glory of His name.
Jesus did not immediately heal Lazarus when He received news that he was sick; Jesus only arrived after Lazarus had been dead for four days. Why did He allow Martha and Mary to endure so much grief when He could have just healed Lazarus and prevented his death? “When Jesus heard that, He said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.” (John 11:4) When Lazarus was resurrected from the dead, “Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on Him.” (John 11:45). Through the death and resurrection of one man, many souls were saved for eternity!
Sometimes we cannot understand God’s plans for our lives, but when we see our Heavenly Father’s heart towards us, we know what He does is for the very best in the scope of all eternity. Trust in the Lord and never doubt His everlasting love and constant presence with you each day!
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
“...Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love...” (Jeremiah 31:3)
