(2Chronicles 32:8)
With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God to help us, and to fight our battles.

——
Sennacherib, the king of Assyria wanted to fight against Jerusalem. He blasphemed against the God of Israel, saying that God was not able to deliver His people. He boasted that all the gods of the nations he had already conquered were useless in protecting the people.

“...Let not thy God in whom thou trustest deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.” (2Kings 19:10)

Hezekiah, the king of Judah, did not allow the taunting of the Assyrian king to intimidate him and the Israelites. Instead, he bowed down before Jehovah and prayed earnestly against Sennacherib.

“And Hezekiah received the letter of the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up into the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD. [15] And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD, and said, O LORD God of Israel, which dwellest between the cherubims, Thou art the God, even Thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; Thou hast made heaven and earth. [16] LORD, bow down Thine ear, and hear: open, LORD, thine eyes, and see: and hear the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent him to reproach the living God. [17] Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have destroyed the nations and their lands, [18] And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them. [19] Now therefore, O LORD our God, I beseech Thee, save Thou us out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that Thou art the LORD God, even Thou only.” (2Kings 19:14-19)

King Hezekiah recognised that Jehovah was the only one True and Living God and all things were in God’s hands. In response to his prayer, God sent an angel who destroyed 185,000 men of the Assyrian army. King Sennacherib returned to his own land and was murdered by his sons (2Kings19:32-37) God delivered the nation of Israel in His great faithfulness and mercy towards His own people.

“For I will defend this city, to save it, for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake. And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the LORD went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.” (2Kings 19:34-35)

May we like King Hezekiah, recognise the greatness and sovereignty of God and be comforted that God uses His power to help us who are undeserving of His goodness and mercy. In all your troubles, turn to Jesus only in prayer; spread all your anxieties and complaints before God who is the Judge of the whole earth. Claim His promises, trust in His goodness and steadfastness, and give Him all the glory when He delivers you (Psalm 50:15).
