The Incredible Journey

The religious teachers taught that Moses and Elijah would come to earth to announce the coming of the Messiah. These were the two greatest prophets of their religion. But God the Father is displeased when Peter wants to build places of rest for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. God hides the scene from view and his voice is heard from heaven pointing to His beloved Son, and commanding all to listen only to Him. And then, when the three disciples recovered, Moses and Elijah were gone. They saw Jesus only.

Who Is the Greatest? — Mark 9:14-37

As we stretch across Arkansas, we remain one house believing for the next one to come to Jesus. We exist to connect people to the heart of God, the salvation of Jesus, and the family within His church.

VERSE OF THE DAY: Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!"—Mark 9:24 
 
In this passage, Jesus heals a boy with an unclean spirit. There are so many important verses, points, and messages in this passage! A secondary key verse is probably v20, bc it demonstrates that the enemy did NOT want toe into the presence of God! This passage covers the importance of faith versus unbelief and what happens when you do choose faith over unbelief or fear. Verse 29 reminds us that we can't do anything without being in prayer, in and with the presence of God. 
 
REFLECTION: Help My Unbelief 
 
• It’s easy to be proud of what we believe. 
• It’s hard to be vulnerable about our doubts. 
• Jesus can move through our faith. 
• He can also use our doubts if we bring them to Him. 
• Our doubts are a weakness until we bring them to Jesus. 
 
GET HONEST ABOUT YOUR DOUBTS: What are some matters of faith you struggle with? How can you bring them to Jesus?

This is the moment of Jesus' transfiguration before Peter, James & John. It's got a little bit of humor in it, in that the three questioned "what this 'rising from the dead' might mean." Often we question what God means by what He says, but often it's literal, right in your face. He says what He means, and He means what He says! Ask: Are you overthinking what God is telling you? 
 
REFLECTION: Listen 
 
• Peter, James, and John experienced the miraculous! 
• The Glory of God showed up and God told them to listen to Jesus. 
• Jesus is worth listening to! 
• God doesn’t speak to PERFECT people. 
• He speaks to people CLOSE to Him. 
 
Q's: When was the last time you heard from God? Everyone hears from God differently. Where do you hear from Him? (In worship? In the Word? When it's quiet? In chaos?) What situation will you put yourself into today to be close to Jesus so you can hear from Him?

Mark 9:1-13 ESV 
 
And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.” 
 
2 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. 4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. 5 And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6 For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7 And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” 8 And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only. 
 
9 And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead might mean. 11 And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?” 12 And he said to them, “Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? 13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.”

And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.”

2 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. 4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. 5 And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6 For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7 And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” 8 And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.

God of Wonder | Mark 9:14-29 | January 26, 2025

God has brought The Brooklyn Tabernacle from a handful of members in a small rundown building in a difficult area, to a congregation of more than 10,000 weekly attendees. Pastor Cymbala and his wife Carol, who directs the popular Grammy Award winning Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, have been used by the Lord not only to preach the Gospel in the inner city of New York, but also to see new churches grow out of the congregation across New York, as well as domestically and internationally. The ministry of the Church has from the outset reached out to the cross-cultural melting pot of New York City. It is comprised of men, women, and children of all ethnic and national origins. However, central to the growth and expansion of the Church has been the continual emphasis on prayer, from the Tuesday Night Prayer Meeting that is attended by thousands to the Prayer Band, members of the Church devoted to boldly "calling on the Lord" for needs from around the world.

Some Christians say that followers of Jesus won’t suffer. But John the Baptist suffered. So did Jesus, and He said, “If they persecute Me, they’ll persecute you.” We’ve got to read the whole counsel of God, which says, “It’s through much tribulation we enter the kingdom of heaven.” Then we’ll know how to praise God in the good times and the bad.

When Peter, James, and John were with Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration, they wanted to stay there. But alas, we can’t stay on the mountain. We’ve got to come back to the valley, where there are problems galore. We need rich time with Jesus, but we also need to work for Him. Let’s ask God for balance so that we can be effective in our service for Him.
