"Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend." A truth often preached, spoken and shared among the church. May we glean much from it and may the Holy Spirit do its best work among us. Iron sharpeneth iron - the physical truth of this is before us; See the illustration for what it is. A piece of wood cannot touch the piece of iron. In order to sharpen the iron, one must have iron. Too often other means are sought to do what naturally what only can be done. Now notice the intent, what is the desired result and end? To be sharpened. One is seeking to sharpening what they already have. Are you sharp? ARe you being sharpened? This is the desired end of all Christians. We cannot be content, nor settled down. The use of a knife over and over dulls its sharpness. The Christian that exercises its works over and over, grows dull without a constant sharpening. The ability to sharpen ones self is not found in areas that are not consistent with Christiantiy. Yea, the very nature of being sharpened in our Christian walk finds the ability to be sharpened by Christ and His ways. IF it is not directly linked to Christ, you are trying something other than iron to sharpen iron. Positive thinking, humanism, religion, false truths, men are all examples of something other than the iron which we need.
