EVERY MAN WANTS TO BE A REAL MAN By Henry Teichrob There is not a man alive who doesn’t want to be a real man. Every man has within him the drive, the desire, that innate sense that he wants to be real. I don’t know how you’ve seen it expressed. When I was a little kid going to a little school house in Indian Head, Saskatchewan we had a ritual that was done about every three or four months. We had a barn with horses and buggies. It was time to prove we were men when you got to be thirteen, fourteen years. There was an old two-by-four by the barn door. All the girls would come to watch who could chin themselves most often. One of the most shameful things you could do was drop off that bar about the second lift. Oh that was terrible. We wanted to be real. We wanted to prove that we were men. The evidences that men try to prove their manhood abound all around us. Some of them quite hilarious sometimes. Others rather pitiful. No man can be a real man, a genuinely real man without coming to grips with the fact that he needs God, and the truth of the Gospel in his life. God constrained me to enter the field of local politics. Politics is the roughest game in town. I had the privilege of being Deputy Mayor for a long time. I watched politicians in the public eye whose life is often a showcase. I have seen them try to be real men and all the things they tried do to be real. It’s amazing what lengths men will go to be to be real. Every man wants to be real. Not one of us wants to be a phony. The one avenue is Jesus Christ.
