“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) Those are the gracious words of Jesus Christ. Let us consider the beauty of character of our Lord Jesus Christ by meditating up on those words. First of all the Lord is calling “come unto me all ye that labour”. Those words are significant. The Lord is not calling the people who belong to a particular race, caste, or nationality. He is calling everybody, irrespective of their caste and kindred. Jesus is no respecter of our background or our origin. He is no respecter of our status in society. He doesn’t care whether people around us respect us or not. He is not bothered whether we are rich or poor. All men and women are equal before Him. He loves everybody, cares everybody and invites everybody. The human society is divided and subdivided into innumerable classes and sections on various grounds. Each one is considered superior to somebody and inferior to somebody. But Jesus makes no such distinctions among the mankind. He calls everybody. He welcomes everybody and wants to help and bless everybody. He is the Lord of all. He is the God of the whole earth and the whole universe. That displays the magnanimity of the Lord Jesus Christ. Secondly, He is calling all that are burdened. What do we mean by the word, “people who are burdened”? The mankind has revolted against its Creator and become cursed. The mankind has inherited curse and God’s punishment from His progenitor, Adam. This has resulted in various forms of burden in our life. People are encumbered under different kinds of loads and burdens. There are financial problems and we have strife and disunity within the families. People have no mental peace. And many are suffering with different kinds of diseases and ill health. Above all these, there is heavy load of the yoke of sin upon the mankind. There is no one who is not burdened in this world. Christ is capable to free us all from every kind of burden. He promises, “I shall give you rest.” But it is important for us to notice how we can really get this rest. Jesus tells us to do three things in order to experience that rest he gives. First thing we have to do is, to come to Jesus. This point is so important that it is impossible to overemphasize it. So many people think that they will be saved by believing a certain doctrine. Many think that they will be saved by joining a certain organization or by taking membership in certain denomination. But we must realize that no doctrine can save us or no denomination can save us. Our salvation is in a person, and that person is Jesus Christ. So the first step we have to take is, “coming to Jesus”. Second and third steps are told in 29th verse of Matthew 11th chapter. Secondly we have to come under the yoke of Jesus Christ, which means to come under His rulership and to come under His authority. The third step we have to take is, we must learn from Jesus what all He wants to teach us. Jesus says, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me.” So many people come to Jesus, but they do not want to come under His yoke. Some people do not want to learn from Jesus. We must learn everything that Jesus wants to teach us. Jesus wants us to become His students and disciples, and only then we can find rest for our souls. Blessed is the person who can take these three steps and enjoy the heavenly peace on earth.
