J. Edwin Orr (1912 - 1987)

Brother Orr shared in an experience of revival in his youth as he traveled by faith and saw many powerful workings of God. After years of seeing personal revival and experiences in his ministry he studied the theme of historical revival to equip and teach the Church.

He published many books on the topic of subject of revival: "Can God?" "Full Surrender" and many others. He ministered cross-denoninationally in baptist, pentecostal, calvary chapel and in many other movements. He was also influential in the Campus Crusade for Christ organization.

Dr. James Edwin Orr was born in Belfast in 1912 and graduated to glory in 1987. Professor Orr was passionately committed to Jesus Christ and dedicated his life to understanding and furthering the work of God - especially in revival and spiritual awakening.

Dr. Orr has much to say to the Christian world today, because his message was a profoundly powerful, eloquent, and accurate explanation of what the Bible says about revival, awakening, and the deeper Christian life.

#3 – Forgiveness and Confession

Tonight, I want to deal with a forgotten doctrine, but I want to begin with one that is not forgotten…to introduce it. I was chaplain of the Hollywood Christian Group at one time. One of the members was Roy Rogers. He used to bring his cowboy friends. One of them came to me and said rather bluntly, ... Read More

A Destructive Ministry Also is Necessary

"See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant." (Jeremiah 1:10) To the preacher who is very much concerned about effectiveness in his type of message, the Prophecy of Jeremiah is a mine ... Read More

Hindrances to Revival: Fear of Emotion

FEAR of emotional display is a widespread complex. Within a week, I heard four preachers1 representing as many denominations, declare their same conviction) in varying words: “We are willing and eager for revival. But we must be quick to crush every appearance of emotional feeling, lest we be led as... Read More

Prayer and Revival

Dr A. T. Pierson once said, 'There has never been a spiritual awakening in any country or locality that did not begin in united prayer.' Let me recount what God has done through concerted, united, sustained prayer. Not many people realize that in the wake of the American Revolution (following 1776-1... Read More

Preparing The Ground For Revival

"See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant" (Jer. 1:10). Of this six-fold commission, four injunctions are destructive and only the latter two are constructive. "To build and to plant... Read More

NATAL, the Province in which Durban is situated, lies about the 30th degree of south latitude: that is to say, about the same latitude south as South Australia, and equivalent in the northern hemisphere to the position of Egypt. Search Me, O God

Search me, O God, and know my heart today; Try me, O Saviour, know my thoughts, I pray. See if there be some wicked way in me; Cleanse me from ev'ry sin and set me free. I praise Thee, Lord, for cleansing me from sin; Fulfill Thy Word and make me pure within. Fill me with fire where once I burned wi... Read More

The Church Must First Repent

"As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent." (Revelation 3:19) The occurrence of the word "Repent" in the messages to the Seven Churches is truly remarkable. The word "Repentance" -- in the mind of the average Christian--is connected with sinners and not with professi... Read More

The Easter Revival in New Zealand

THE story of the Revivals which began in the Auckland Province of North Island, New Zealand, demonstrates very clearly how Revival may be expected in any part. A cablegram received in London and published in The Christian, summed up the work fairly well. It was signed by the Rev. A. S. Wilson, autho... Read More

Conditions For Revival

Revival, primarily, is the renewal of life in something that has already possessed life. It is impossible to revive something that has never been alive. II Chronicles 7:14 "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways... Read More
